In the marquee match of Thursday night the Golden State Warriors travel to Texas to take on the team directly behind them in the standings – the Houston Rockets. Both squads played on Wednesday with the Rockets easily beating the Magic and the Warriors barely pulling out the win vs. the reinvigorated Mavericks.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Warriors winning three of the four contests and the Rockets took the first meeting this season. The Rockets hold the all-time record having bested the Warriors 120 to 91.
Golden State Warriors
The phrase without missing a beat applies to Stephen Curry who returned to the Warriors lineup to play the Memphis Grizzlies and promptly dropped 10 three pointers (on 13 attempts). By night’s end the Warriors put up 141 points on the board. While Curry was out Golden State went 9-2, and although the team remained strong their offense was far less explosive.

This season the Warriors have weathered the injury storm with several core members needing to miss games. Three consecutive trips to the finals takes a toll on health and the injuries this season are a direct example of that wear and tear. To wit, heading into the Mavericks game Wednesday Draymond Green (ankle), Andre Iguodala (knee), Zaza Pachulia (illness) and Omri Casspi (ribs) were all listed as questionable. Green and Pachulia played Iguodala and Casspi did not.

Missing core members other Warriors have stepped up. In particular, rookie Jordan Bell has produced so well he’s moved ahead of JaVale McGee in the rotation.
Houston Rockets
The teams haven’t met since opening night when the Rockets eked out a one point victory. This match however lost a little of it’s shine with news James Harden is out for a minimum of two weeks with a strained hamstring.
Chris Paul will need to pick up the slack in Harden’s absence. Although there is a minutes restriction on Paul that went by the way side in the Lakers game as Paul was needed to play 42:22 in the double overtime victory. In the victory over Orlando Paul played 32 minutes producing 8 points, 7 rebounds, 13 assists and 2 steals.
The timing of Harden’s injury comes on the heels of the Rockets losing five games in a row. The other major loss for the Rockets is Luc Mbah A Moute who suffered a dislocated shoulder which will keep him out of the lineup until mid January.

In the next scheduled 15 games the Rockets play nine playoff seeds as well as an improved Bulls, Mavericks and Clippers squad. Although the Rockets remain the second seed with a 2.5 buffer on the Spurs, clearly how they navigate these next 15 games will be critical.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Golden State Warriors vs. Houston Rockets NBA Prediction: Line off as of 4:15 AM ET Thursday
With both teams playing Wednesday night, not surprisingly the line is off. The Rockets will be in tough having to match up versus the Warriors without Harden and Mbah A Moute. After three consecutive final appearances, two titles and a record setting regular season record the Warriors haven’t seemed as motivated. That said, the one point loss on opening night looms, so expect the Warriors to deliver a message in this outing.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Line off (will update as available).
Although Chris Paul didn’t have to log extensive minutes in the Magic win, the Rockets can’t afford to push his minutes and risk another injury. Warriors even score 1-1.
