Friday, November 19th finds the Golden State Warriors playing the Detroit Pistons in their first of two matches this season. The Warriors will host on January 4th.
The Warriors are playing a back-to-back set and will be extra fatigued as they arrive after an overtime match that they lost 113-120 to the Hornets. Detroit played Friday and got pounded by the Hawks 112-136.
The Warriors hold the all-time record between the clubs with 159 wins in 305 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with Golden State winning both contests.
Golden State Warriors
Although the Warriors haven’t exactly looked like killers they aren’t sweating their start. Of course they want to be turning more of these close games into wins but they are one of the few teams who don’t care about seeding and have demonstrated their seeding doesn’t matter.
That said, it wouldn’t be ideal for the Dubs to end up facing two of the tougher teams on route to the Western Conference Finals instead of having one of the top two seeds and getting a play-in seed opponent.
Steve Kerr is navigating keeping his veteran core healthy with getting his youngsters minutes. I complain about Thibodeau and other coaches not giving their youngsters enough minutes to gain experience so I can’t knock Kerr for doing precisely that.
Jonathan Kuminga is only averaging 10.8 minutes per game but both Moses Moody (16.2) and James Wiseman (16.8) are averaging above 16 minutes.
JaMychal Green (19) and Donte DiVincenzo (14) are clearly more integral to what Kerr wants to run although some more time spent with the G-League squad for Kuminga may help expedite his growth and development and that could sway Kerr to give him more run.
Kuminga just turned 20, so he’s very young and the Dubs are clearly taking the long-term view of his development.
‘Andre Iguodala (hip) is questionable while Donte DiVincenzo (hamstring) is out indefinitely.
Detroit Pistons
In the last 10 games between these clubs it’s a bit surprising that the Pistons are the squad who’ve attempted 27 additional perimeter shots. What isn’t surprising is the Dubs had the better efficiency (40.3% versus 34.1%).
Neither team is feasting from deep this season with the Dubs ranked 20th and Pistons 24th for 3-point efficiency. More concerning for the Pistons is their 30th defensive rank a regression from last season when they ranked 24th.
Granted they’ve played the offensively gifted Hawks twice but Dwane Casey prides himself on his defensive chops and the Pistons aren’t displaying any growth despite having a ton of constancy from last season.
Alec Burks (foot) was downgraded to out Sunday while Marvin Bagley III (knee) is out indefinitely.

That should equate to Golden State coming out aggressive as they sure won’t want to go into Miami down 0-2 on this five game road trip.
