Sunday, April 24th the Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets tip-off in Game 4 of their first-round series. The Warriors are seeking a sweep following wins in Game 1 (123-107), Game 2 (126-106), and Game 3 (118-113).
Denver won the season series 3-1 with victories on December 28th ( 89-86), February 16th (117-116), and March 7th (131-124) while Golden State won 117-116 on February 26th.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Warriors taking two of the three contests. The Nuggets have won 99 of the 183 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Golden State Warriors
With Stephen Curry missing the final 12 games of the regular season and the Warriors going 6-6 in that period most analysts gave the Suns, Grizzlies or Mavericks better odds of winning the West.
Yet, two weeks into the postseason, the Suns are dealing with the loss of Devin Booker to a hamstring injury and in a dog fight with the Pelicans while both Dallas and Memphis are all tied up facing a best of three situation now.
Meanwhile, Golden State is the lone Western team with a shot of sweeping their series and gaining some valuable rest awaiting their second-round opponent.
Perhaps the only deterrent for the Dubs would be resting too long and allowing the offense to cool off as they look even better than they did at season start.
It’s a frightening prospect for opponents with the Big 3 of Klay Thompson having rediscovered his consistency, Draymond Green back to being the best defender in the NBA, and Curry functioning at full speed again shooting the 3-ball at 44 percent.
The big upgrade, however, is the rise of Jordan Poole who is playing so well Curry continues to enter as a reserve and in clutch time the combo of the Splash Brothers with Poole makes the Warriors arguably the most lethal offense in the NBA.
Through three playoff games, Poole is averaging 28.6 points shooting 66.9 percent from the field and 59 percent from the perimeter. He’s playing so well in the starting line-up Steve Kerr is continuing to bring Curry off the bench.
Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokic is doing his best but even a massive double-double of 37 points and 18 rebounds along with five assists, and three steals wasn’t enough to push the Nuggets to a victory in Game 3.
They are in jeopardy of being swept and Joker’s supporting cast doesn’t appear to have enough to alter the inevitable first-round exit.
Aaron Gordon offered a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds but again, his best role is being the fourth scoring option and providing a defensive presence. Expecting him to do more than he already is providing isn’t realistic.
Likewise, Will Barton and Monte Morris who scored 14 and 10 points respectively in Game 3 could have a big night but expecting them to sustain it for four consecutive games is a stretch.
Jamal Murray (ACL) and Michael Porter Jr (back) are out indefinitely.

Free Golden State Warriors vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
The 76ers had a shot to sweep in the East and whiffed on that opportunity with several Sixers getting banged up while Joel Embiid has a thumb injury that he’ll have to play with throughout the postseason.
So the Warriors should take heed of their opportunity to close out this series and then bubblewrap their core with the biggest advantage any team can gain at this time of the season — health and rest time.
Nuggets coach Michael Malone spoke of pride after the Game 3 loss and the team is at home, but while the Warriors are clicking offensively, the defense is also back to the standard they began the season with.
Officiating has been suspect through most series and in three of the four Saturday matches (Raptors, Jazz, Wolves) gave a significant free throw advantage to the underdogs who all won.
Golden State has five players who’ve got championship mettle and have experienced a wonky whistle so I doubt they’ll be unsettled by it. With how well the Dubs are playing I’ve shifted off my gentleman’s sweep prediction and expect them to close this series out today.
