Thursday, March 10th finds the Golden State Warriors playing the Denver Nuggets for the fourth and final time this season. Denver leads the series winning 89-86 on December 28th and earlier this week 131-124 on March 7th while Golden State won 117-116 on February 26th.
The Nuggets played the front side of a back-to-back in a 106-100 winning effort versus the Kings on Wednesday while the Warriors took control early versus the Clippers winning 112-97.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Warriors taking two of the three contests. The Nuggets have won 99 of the 183 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Golden State Warriors
Back in January Draymond Green was sidelined by what the team initially called a calf injury but after further probing, they discovered the real issue was linked to his back.
He’s missed 26 consecutive games but is gearing up for a return stating this week his intended return date is March 14th versus the Wizards (which consequently is Stephen Curry’s birthday).
That means he would miss two more matches (Nuggets, Bucks) and return with 14 games left on the Warriors’ calendar, albeit that includes three sets of back-to-backs that he likely wouldn’t play both nights of.
This is great news for the Warriors as there were skeptics who wondered if he’d be able to return at all. Without him, the defense has taken a huge dip but the offense has been equally impacted.
As I predicted, Jordan Poole had a huge breakout night leading the team with 32 on 11 of 19 from the field in their loss to the Nuggets on Monday and that efficiency carried over to Wednesday as he scored 20 points on 8 of 13.
Klay Thompson also scored 20 while rookie Jonathan Kuminga led the team with 21 points. Stephen Curry (15), Andrew Wiggins (14), and Moses Moody (10) were the other double-figure contributors with Wiggins also collecting a double-double adding 10 rebounds.
Otto Porter Jr. (illness), Andre Iguodala (back), and Gary Payton II (knee) are out Thursday. Green (calf) and James Wiseman (knee) are out indefinitely.
Denver Nuggets
For the second time this week, the Nuggets will face the Warriors on the second game of a back-to-back. This time will be distinctly different however as the Warriors elected to rest Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins in the initial game this week and had several others out.
Denver flirted with disaster allowing Sacramento to erase an 18-point lead but as per usual Nikola Jokic didn’t let that impact the final outcome as he registered a double-double of 38 points and 18 rebounds plus seven assists
Monte Morris (20), Aaron Gordon (11), and Bryn Forbes (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Will Barton (ankle), Jeff Green (personal), and Bones Hyland (ankle) are questionable for Thursday. Vlatko Cancar (fractured foot), and Jamal Murry (ACL), and Michael Porter Jr. (back) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games.
- Denver is 13-7 ATS in their last 20 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 9 of Golden State’s last 11 games.
- The Nuggets are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games when playing as the underdog.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
Jokic put up 32 points, 15 rebounds, and 13 assists on Monday versus the Warriors and will be a handful even with the Dubs having more of their core participating this time.
Draymond Green would typically draw that defensive assignment so it’s unlikely Steve Kerr will have anyone to limit the big man although that’s not a terrible thing as these teams could meet in the playoffs so it’s wiser to keep the defensive strategy in their back pocket.
In fact, if the teams finish the season as currently seeded they would meet in the first round – not exactly an ideal situation for the Warriors as this might be their worst matchup in the West.
For that reason, just from a psychological perspective, I think the Warriors come out with more intensity but it should be a close battle.
