The Western Conference Finals between the third seed Golden State Warriors and fourth-seed Dallas Mavericks shifts venues for the next two games with the Texas team hosting Game 3 on Sunday, May 22nd.
The Warriors won the opening two contests in Golden State to take an early 2-0 lead. In Game 2, the Warriors erased a 19-point deficit and 14-point halftime lead to win 126-117.
Golden State will host *Game 5, Thursday, May 26th, and *Game 7, Monday, May 30th while Dallas will host Game 4, Tuesday, May 24th, and *Game 6, Saturday, May 28th (*if necessary).
The Mavericks won the 2021-22 season series 3-1 and hold the all-time advantage having won 89 times of the club’s 169 regular-season meetings. This is the second time the clubs are playing in the postseason with Golden State winning 4-2 in the first round of 2007.
Golden State Warriors
Although the Warriors were expecting a bounce-back effort from the Mavs, they got caught up in the officiating (which was absolutely atrocious initially) instead of ignoring the stripes and focusing on defense.
Stephen Curry led the Dubs with 32 points, 8 rebounds, five assists, and shot well (6-10) from deep keeping his team in the mix early by scoring five triples in the first half.
Warriors fans are also used to Jordan Poole (23) and Klay Thompson (15) scoring, but it was the supporting players who were the stars of the Game 2 victory.
While many teams including the Warriors have abandoned traditional lineups in favor of small-ball units they’ve re-invested in Kevon Looney and it’s paying huge dividends.
Looney produced a double-double featuring a career-best 21 points along with 12 rebounds (five on the offensive glass) and although he didn’t register a block he was a force in the paint altering shots.
Once again, Andrew Wiggins came up big, and Otto Porter Jr. excelled in his role off the bench with both hitting timely shots.
Wiggins provided 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, a steal, a block and hit three of his five 3-point attempts. Porter Jr. offered 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block.
Unfortunately, Wiggins tweaked his ankle in the match and is questionable for Sunday. If he can’t play Porter Jr. likely takes his spot and perhaps Jonathan Kuminga will get some run.
Andre Iguodala (neck) and Gary Payton II (elbow) haven’t played in the series and their return date is unknown. James Wiseman (knee) is out for the season.
Dallas Mavericks
After losing the opening match by double-digits and failing to score 100 points (87-112) it was expected Dallas would come out aggressive offensively and with more physicality on defense in Game 2.
They accomplished that feat and then some by scoring 72 points in the first half punctuated by shooting 15 of 27 (55%) from deep. Yet, the strategy never shifted even as they struggled to connect from the perimeter after the break attempting another 18 triples but making only six.
Reggie Bullock (6) and Luka Doncic (5) scored 11 of the Mavs’ 21 triples but just like the opener, Dallas wasn’t able to get timely stops.
Doncic who left Wednesday’s match feeling sick, barely slept for two days and is still nursing a sore shoulder but showed no ill effects in Game 2, scoring 42 points, with five rebounds, eight assists, three steals, and a block while getting to the line for 15 free throws (made 13).
Jalen Brunson continued his march toward a big payday this offseason offering up 31 points while Bullock chipped in 21 as the only other double-figure contributor.
Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Golden State is 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Dallas is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games at home.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Golden State’s last 6 games on the road.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Dallas’ last 7 games.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
While the Warriors are the team best known for increasing perimeter scoring featuring the Splash Brothers who are considered the best 3-point shooting duo ever they were the team who adapted in Game 2.
That tweak included driving the paint where they feasted outscoring Dallas 62-30.
The Warriors capitalized on their depth with the reserve unit almost tripling the Dallas’ reserves who offered more energy standing on the sidelines than they did in the game (don’t be surprised if Dallas is fined since they were warned about this in both the Jazz and Suns series).
Poole outscored them on his own leading the Dubs bench to 36 points versus the Mavs 13.
Although I’d like to ignore the officiating they’ve been a major factor this postseason with every single series experiencing at least one game where the whistle has far too much of a biased impact.
For that reason, it’s reasonable to expect the calls to go in the favor of Dallas early either via free throw disparity or whoever is hot for Golden State/best defenders getting in early foul trouble.
Either way, Dallas is in a must-win situation and fortunately have recent success coming back in series after falling behind 0-2.
