Thursday, March 3rd finds the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks playing for the fourth and final time this season. The Warriors won 130-92 on January 25th while the Mavericks won 99-82 on January 5th.
These clubs played just this past Sunday, February 27th with Dallas erasing a 21 point deficit to win 107-101 and take a 2-1 lead on the season series into this match.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Mavericks taking two of the three contests. The Mavericks have won 88 of the 168 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Golden State Warriors
When Chris Paul got injured the thinking was the Warriors might be able to catch the Suns for first overall. The opposite effect occurred due to a season-worst slump that has witnessed Golden State lose six of their last eight matches.
Instead of closing the gap on Phoenix, they are in jeopardy of being overtaken for second with the Grizzlies now just a half-game back of them.
Although the Dubs continue to rank first defensively (104. 8) for the season in their last eight games they rank 21st (114.8). The obvious answer to their regression is the absence of Draymond Green.
Green is often cited with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson as part of the Warriors’ Big 3 although his stats don’t feature double-digits in any key area. The current struggles offer evidence of just how much his presence impacts the Warriors.
And it’s not just on defense as Green helps keep the offense flowing, often leading the break or taking the role of key playmaker allowing Curry to play off the ball and get some easier shots.
Thompson and Andrew Wiggins are the second and third scoring options behind Curry but neither has the playmaking skills Green offers.
Moving forward, Steve Kerr will need to get his charges to maintain focus and effort for 48 minutes given they gave up 16 and 21 point leads in recent games to the Nuggets and Mavericks.
Klay Thompson (illness), Nemanja Bjelica (quad), and Moses Moody (eye) were upgraded to probable, Damion Lee (quad) is questionable and Andre Iguodala (back) was downgraded to out on Thursday. Draymond Green (calf/back) and James Wiseman (knee) are out indefinitely.
Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks are in their own seeding battle trying to fend off the Nuggets who are just one game back of them. They’ve won eight of their last 10 matches as have the Nuggets.
Dallas hoped to move into a home-court seed but the Jazz has won nine of their last ten matches to keep their edge over the Mavericks.
In their match versus the Lakers, Dallas took a 21 point lead but had to hold off a desperate LA squad. Luka Doncic took over late challenging LeBron James to stop him punctuating just how little teams fear the King and his squad now.
Frank Ntilikina (ankle) and Trey Burke (shoulder) are questionable while Marquese Chriss (knee) was downgraded to out Thursday versus Golden State. Theo Pinson (finger) and Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 8-2 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Mavericks are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 matches versus each other
- The over/under is 6-4 in the team’s last 10 head to head matches
- Golden State is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games.
- Dallas is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Dallas’ last 10 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Golden State’s last 7 games.
Free Golden State Warriors vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
Although the Warriors are struggling they have added motivation to win this game after coughing up the 21 point lead to Dallas this past Sunday.
Plus they can feel the Grizzlies breathing down their necks so a loss combined with a Memphis win (they play Boston tonight) would equate to dropping to third. Steve Kerr needs to figure out how to get the group he has back on track until Green can back on the court.
That’s a tough task particularly facing the Mavericks on their home court where they are lethal but with Thompson expected back I like the odds of them covering and winning a close match.
