Saturday, October 29th, finds the Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Hornets facing each other for the first time this season with the second game scheduled for December 27th in San Francisco.
Golden State last played on Thursday, defeating the Heat 123-110 while the Hornets are playing the second game of a back-to-back set having played the Orlando Magic on Friday.
Last season, the squads played twice each winning on their home court. All-time the teams have played on 64 occasions and own an equal split (32) of those contests.
Golden State Warriors
Klay Thompson is arguably the most competitive player in the association. He absolutely HATES to lose and his love for the game is pure.
During the two-plus years he was rehabbing to get back on the court there were numerous segments during Warriors games where they checked in with him on his rehab and the progress he was making.
I remember one specific flashback when he was sitting on the bench all alone, head in his hands. Later that week the follow-up segment noted Klay was going through a really tough stretch feeling depressed about how long his return was taking.
Flash forward to comments Thompson made in response to Charles Barkley saying he wasn’t the same player as before his injuries following their loss to the Suns…
“I tore my ACL and achilles in consecutive years, and I still helped my team win a championship. I put so much freaking effort in to get back to this point,” Thompson said. “I played 57 games in three years. Give me some freaking time to get that back. Who goes through something like that and comes back? It just hurt my heart. But I’m going to internalize it and it’s going to be fuel for me.”
Two nights later, Klay was using that fuel as he scored 19 connecting on five 3-pointers. Clearly, Sir Charles motivated Klay but the truth is he needs time. Thompson suffered anxiety this offseason worried he could re-injure himself so he arrived at camp not exactly in game condition.
Zach Lowe had the best comments saying it was raw and honest and then pointed out how analysts nitpicked at Thompson’s game and how he beasted in the title run (averaged 19 points and shot 38.5% from deep on 9.1 attempts).
For all the players who struggle to be consistent, the one thing you’ll never see is an opponent leaving Klay open!
Charlotte Hornets
The Magic finally got into the win column and did it via a statement game absolutely annihilating the Hornets 93-107! It equated to the thrid loss in five games by the Hornets whose two victories occurred versus the Spurs and Hawks.
Gordon Hayward was the top scorer for the Hornets with 18 points adding six rebounds, and three assists. Nick Richards served up 14 in a reserve role. Kelly Oubre Jr. (12) and James Bouknight (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Star LaMelo Ball has yet to play for the team in the regular season dealing with an ankle injury and isn’t expected back on Saturday. Terry Rozier (ankle) and Cody Martin (quad) missed the game Friday and are questionable for Saturday.
