2019-2020 NBA Previews – Warriors Odds
Looking for 2019 Golden State Warriors Predictions? The Warriors will not look like themselves to tip off the new season. Kevin Durant is gone. Klay Thompson is out recovering from a torn ACL. DeMarcus Cousins is (kinda) in Los Angeles. D’Angelo Russell is in the starting backcourt. And Andre Iguodala is (again…kinda) with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Expecting this team to come out in championship form is unfair, but not expecting them to compete is doing a disservice to Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and the culture Steve Kerr has built since taking over for Mark Jackson.

Golden State Warriors Strengths:
Championship Mettle:
You can’t underestimate that this team is used to winning, even if not all of its current pieces are. Curry and Green will lead the way on the court but also in the locker room. If Warriors fans are honest with themselves, they’ll admit Durant did nothing for their locker-room culture the last few years (even though they should never trade the days with him for anything), so there’s even a chance this group rallies in ways we haven’t even seen throughout their dynastic half-decade run.
Curry, MVP Edition:
It’s going to take a lot, but Stephen Curry has a path to MVP this season. Voters love stats, which Curry will get plenty of no longer in Durant’s shadow. Voters love narratives. Curry leading a team post-KD and sans Klay to anything resembling contention in the wild wild Western Conference. Voters love winning, which will be part of the previous category—killing two birds with one stone (from probably well behind the arc). If the stars align, Curry could claim definitive status of best player in the league. Again, it won’t be easy to accomplish. But expect Curry to be in the top-five conversation regardless.

3-Point Shooting/Defense:
These aren’t two categories you usually see lumped together, but we’re going to do that here considering both are a bit more deserving of wild-card status than in years past. In prior editions of this exact same breakdown, these would be easy strengths. But you have to consider the fact that Durant and Thompson did serious damage on the perimeter on both ends. Chances are, the incumbents are fine and this team looks fresh deep into the year. There’s always a chance, though, that the Durant and Thompson absences are too much to overcome and the Dubs fall out of elite status in these areas.
Golden State Warriors Weaknesses:
Health:
It’s been said plenty of times that the only team that can beat the Warriors was the Dubs themselves. And injuries were a big part of that, but with the exception of falling to Toronto in June, this group was largely built to defy adversity. It doesn’t have that luxury this season. With Thompson already out, Curry and Green’s health become crucial. This team is already short-handed and it can’t afford to lose anyone else from the rotation.
Small Forward/Center:
Despite having a new set of expectations for this year’s Warriors, we still can’t help but feel a bit…weird…when we see non-All-Stars starting. It’s clearly more of a testament to their recent history than an indictment against their current squad, but guys like Alfonzo McKinnie (SF) and Kevon Looney (C) don’t exactly give off the same vibe as Durant and Cousins did last season. These guys—not to mention their non-household-named backups—have a lot to prove and not a lot of time to prove it.

Golden State Warriors Betting Prediction: Over 48.5
If Klay Thompson is healthy by the postseason, which all indications are that he will be, this team is going to be dangerous. It doesn’t matter what their regular-season record was at that point—the Dubs are going to be trotting out something resembling their original championship core, and if a few role players have overachieved in the system, there’s no reason to think they won’t be among the favorites to capture another Larry O’Brien Trophy.
Here’s the thing, though: This team could also “overachieve” in the regular season. Forty-nine wins is a lot for a team significantly worse off than it was a year ago and stuck in a conference that just keeps getting better, but it also would be the exact team to push past 50 wins when everyone thinks they’re run is officially over.
Expect just that. The Dubs should push and ultimately exceed 50 wins this season, and then the playoffs will show us what their 2020 iteration is really made of.
