Thursday, March 3rd the Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors meet for the third and final time this season. Detroit won both previous matches on November 13th (127-121) and January 14th (103-87).
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the Pistons losing 113-116 to Washington while the Raptors completed their second consecutive back-to-back set erasing a double-digit deficit to defeat the Nets 109-108.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Pistons sweeping the regular-season series. The Pistons have won 59 of the 97 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Detroit Pistons
Winners of three out of their last five games the Pistons have looked more competitive during this stretch and even in their two losses (Boston, Washington) were in the game to the end.
Cade Cunningham is playing like the top draft pick averaging 20.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists. That’s a jump In comparison to his seasonal production of 16.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.1 assists
In the loss to the Wizards, the trio of Cunningham, Jerami Grant, and Saddiq Bey led the charge for Detroit accounting for 65 of Detroit’s points.
Specifically, Grant registered 26 points, three rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block. The rookie added 20 points, nine rebounds, and five assists while Bey produced 19 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
Typically the Pistons bench unit is one of the best in the association but they lost that battle to the Wizards getting outscored 44 to 30
Hamidou Diallo (ankle) is probable while Marvin Bagley III (ankle) was downgraded to doubtful for Thursday versus the Raptors.
Toronto Raptors
After losing four of five games and the initial two matches out of the break the Raptors got back on track winning both games against the Nets to pad their edge over Brooklyn.
This game marks the start of their third consecutive back-to-back set that will feature the Magic on Friday marking their fifth and sixth games in seven and eight days.
On paper, this should be an automatic win for Toronto but the Pistons and more accurately Dwane Case is their nemesis. Detroit won both previous games this season and holds an 8-3 edge versus the Raptors since Casey took over in Detroit.
OG Anunoby visited a specialist about his finger who advised the forward won’t need surgery. Toronto expects him to be out for approximately two weeks although he’s listed as questionable on the injury report.
Fred VanVleet missed his second consecutive game and third in four matches due to knee soreness and is listed as questionable for Thursday. With Malachi Flynn playing well versus the Nets the Raptors will likely take their time allowing him to heal as well.
DJ Wilson (knee) is out.

Free Detroit Pistons vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Again, this is one of those games that can’t just be based on talent and seeding because of the dynamics between Casey and the Raptors.
Factor in the schedule and this being the fifth game in seven days for Toronto plus the likely absence of VanVleet and Anunoby and it makes for a much tougher call to make.
While the Raptors’ size and defensive versatility often cause issues for opponents the Pistons can counter their size and athleticism which is why Toronto struggles against this matchup.
This will go one of two ways – either a blowout victory by the Raptors or a battle to the buzzer that the Pistons will win. My bias is showing but I’ll pick the former.
