Sunday, April 10th, the Detroit Pistons and Philadelphia 76ers play for the fourth and final occasion of this season.
The Sixers are up 2-1 in the regular-season series having won on October 28th (110-102) and November 4th (109-98) while the Pistons won the March 31st match 102-94.
The Pistons arrive following a 101-131 losing effort to the Bucks on Friday while the 76ers are completing a back-to-back set having beat the Pacers 133-120 on Saturday.
Last season, the teams played three times with the 76ers taking two of the three contests. The 76ers hold the all-time record having bested the Pistons in 225 of their 383 matches
Detroit Pistons
There isn’t much in play for the Pistons in this final game of the season. They know they are heading back to the NBA draft lottery. The only question is whether they will have the third-worst or fourth-worst record.
That’s an important distinction though because the teams with the three worst records have the best odds of winning the top draft pick. Detroit currently has one of those coveted bottom three spots.
However, if they win this final match and the Thunder lose their final game they would move up to the fourth-worst slot. Perhaps that’s why rookie star Cade Cunningham is listed as questionable.
Cunningham (hip) is questionable while Cory Joseph (back) and Marvin Bagley III (hip) are out Sunday. Hamidou Diallo (ankle) and Jerami Grant (calf) are done for the season.
Philadelphia 76ers
Seeding at the top portion of the Eastern Conference bracket is very much in play on the final day of the season. While the Heat has locked down the top berth the second, third, and fourth seeds will be decided Sunday.
Milwaukee or Boston can finish second although the Bucks control their fate since a win versus Cleveland clinches the second spot for the Bucks. Similarly, a loss by Boston would net the same results, however, a tie would go to the Celtics.
Boston has the best scenario in the tiebreakers owning them against both the Bucks and 76ers while the Bucks also own the tiebreak on Philly.
After the loss to the Raptors on Thursday, it seems likely they’d prefer the third seed since the Bulls are the sixth seed and are stumbling into the postseason.
In order to get that third seed, however, they need to beat the Pistons and hope the Celtics lose to the Grizzlies — both possible results especially with Ja Morant back and looking as strong as ever.
Georges Niang (knee) and Charles Bassey (shoulder) are both questionable for Sunday versus the Pistons.

The Pistons have proven they can beat some of the elite teams have already beaten the 76ers once this season but likely won’t want any part of making it two wins given the lottery circumstances.
Again, Philly’s preference will be the Bulls and the third seed so expect them to come out and jump on Detroit from the tip. Also, keep an eye on Embiid as he looks to put up big points in order to win the scoring title.
Still, with a spread of 12.5 points, it won’t be surprising if the Pistons keep this match close and succumb in the final frame in order to simultaneously send a message to Philly to watch out next season while also ensuring they get the loss and better draft odds this year.
