Thursday, March 17th the Detroit Pistons playing the Orlando Magic for the fourth and final meeting of the season. Detroit leads the season series 2-1 with victories on October 30th (110-103) and January 8th (97-92) while the Magic won the January 28th match (119-103).
Both teams last played on Tuesday with Detroit losing 98-105 to the Heat 98-105 while the Magic got pummelled 108-150 by the Nets.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Magic winning two of three contests. The Pistons hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 67 of their 118 matches.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons made it a tough game for the Heat even without Cade Cunningham playing as he was suffering from a non-COVID illness. The Heat looked to be in good shape but then Jimmy Butler sprained his ankle for the third time this season.
Detroit took advantage and held Miami to 11 third-quarter points while scoring 22 to take a five-point lead into the final frame. But the depth of the Heat prevailed and without their talented rookie, Detroit didn’t have an answer.
Jerami Grant led the way with 22 points, four rebounds, two steals, and a block. Saddiq Bey was the only other Pistons starter to hit double-figures with 13. Isaiah Livers was the top reserve scorer with 16 points while Marvin Bagley III chipped in 13 points.
Detroit has the 28th ranked offense and 25th ranked defense but their post All-Star rankings showcase their improved play as they rank 17th and 19th respectively.
Rodney McGruder (hamstring) and Cade Cunningham (illness) are questionable for Thursday. Jerami Grant (knee) is out while Hamidou Diallo (finger) and Chris Smith (knee) were downgraded to out versus Orlando. Frank Jackson (back) is out indefinitely.
Orlando Magic
Like the Pistons the Magic have played decidedly better since returning from the All-Star break. For the season they rank 20th defensively and 29th offensively, but since returning from the break they possess the top ranked defense although the offense remained an issue (28th ranked).
Although Tuesday that stellar defense wasn’t on display and is a game they’d like to forget. They allowed the Nets to score 48 first-quarter points and by the half were down by 30 points.
Kyrie Irving carved them up for 60 points scoring 41 in the first half. Mo Wagner delivered a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Cole Anthony led the Magic with 19 points while Wendell Carter Jr (18) and Franz Wagner (16) were the other double-figure contributors.
Carter Jr. (ankle) and Chuma Okeke (knee) are questionable while Jalen Suggs (ankle) was downgraded to out for Thursday’s match versus Detroit. Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Bol Bol (foot) are out indefinitely.

- Magic are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite.
Detroit Pistons vs. Orlando Magic NBA Analysis:
With March Madness beginning the NBA only has this one match tonight featuring two of the teams who have been tanking their way to the NBA Lottery. Orlando sits 29th and Detroit 28th meaning if the season ended today they would be in that coveted bottom three who earn the best odds for the bingo balls.
Both clubs can be highly competitive when they focus and don’t allow long gaps of missed offense. Orlando in particular will be looking to rebound from the embarrassing 42 point loss.
If Cunningham can’t go the Hornets have the decided advantage, and that’s compounded by the Pisto lack of road wins.
