Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey will give opposing backcourts fits night in and night out. In their debut together on Wednesday, the two went for 18 and 19 points, respectively, splitting pretty evenly a 14-of-31 showing from the field.
Cade did his thing collecting 10 assists along the way, and as Jaden learns the game at this level, he’ll continue to take on the leadership role Detroit needs.
Against New York, the guards will look to go at Knicks newcomer Jalen Brunson early and often. Neither Cade nor Jaden is Ja Morant, but following Ja’s blueprint from Game 1 will help Detroit set the tone.
New York Knicks
It’s tough to ever know exactly what to make of the Knicks, and that Game 1 showing against Memphis doesn’t help. But it did provide us with some insights.
For starters, the rally to come back late showed that this team has something of a new spirit. A big part of that is Brunson, who provided much of the spark late.
The biggest contributors of the night, though, were Julius Randle and Cam Reddish. Randle is ready to prove last year’s slump was an outlier and not a return to the norm, while Reddish is betting on himself having not signed an extension over the summer.
These two look motivated to get it going early, and the Pistons will give them a good opportunity to do just that.
