Tuesday, March 15th, finds the Detroit Pistons facing the Miami Heat for the fourth and final time this season. Miami leads the series 2-1 with victories on November 23rd (100-92) and December 23rd (115-112) while the Pistons won 100-90 on December 19th.
Detroit last played on Sunday losing a closely contested battle (102-106) versus the Clippers while the Heat lost 104-113 to the Wolves on Saturday.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Heat winning two of the three contests. The Heat holds the all-time record with 64 wins in 120 matches versus the Pistons.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons spent the greater portion of the season with their focus set on lottery bingo balls and constructed their game plans accordingly. But like several of the actively tanking clubs, Detroit has shifted its stretch run strategy to playing the role of spoiler.
It’s a smart choice as these young clubs can experience winning and build upon the momentum gained to carry into offseason homework and to build upon at season start next year.
Cade Cunningham has steadily improved as the season progressed and is being mentioned with Evan Mobley and Scottie Barnes in Rookie of the Year discussions. Mobley has been tagged as the frontrunner for most of the season based on the Cavaliers’ record.
But entering this week the Raptors are only a game back of Cleveland with Barnes being integral to each of the four road wins versus San Antonio, Phoenix, Denver, and LA (Lakers). Both Cleveland and Toronto are missing pieces of their core but the difference is Toronto is winning big games while the Cavs are struggling.
Cunningham is putting up massive stats, especially since the All-Star Break but what’s working against him winning the award is the Pistons record. Plus rookies who play for losing teams get more touches, more leeway, and don’t feel the same pressure.
He may not be on the same defensive level as Mobley or Barnes but he’s a quality two-way player who the Pistons will build their future core around. Since the All-Star break, he’s averaging 22.3 points on 19.6 field goal attempts, 7.5 rebounds (1.0 on the offensive glass), and 6.0 assists.
Detroit is 5-5 in that period which Cunningham is definitely impacting along with the chemistry (and production) of the rookie with Saddiq Bey and Jerami Grant.
Rodney McGruder (hamstring), Killian Hayes (groin). and Isaiah Steward (knee) are probable, Hamidou Diallo (finger) was downgraded to out and Chirs Smith is questionable versus the Heat on Tuesday. Frank Jackson (back) are out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
The Heat continues to lead the East with a two-game edge over their closest opponent. There are 13 matches remaining on the Heat schedule with most (eight) of those on the home court.
The split on those contests features just five teams seeded seventh or higher and ranks as the fourth easiest strength of schedule to close the season. Although the Heat has navigated injury all season, particularly to their core starters, other than minor knicks and bruises they have everyone gearing up for the playoffs.
One of those minor injuries is to Jimmy Butler who is questionable for Tuesday due a sore toe. Even Markieff Morris is finally back after missing 58 games following the altercation with Nikola Jokic in Denver.
He returned Saturday playing 17 minutes versus the Wolves collecting six points and four rebounds. Bam Adebayo led the way with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds plus four assists, and three steals.
Kyle Lowry scored 14 points adding seven rebounds and seven assists. while Tyler Herro led scoring (30 ), and Max Strus (19) was the other double-digit contributor.
Caleb Martin (knee) was downgraded to out while the club will rest Victor Oladipo (knee) as part of his scheduled injury maintenance.

Free Detroit Pistons vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
.All three meetings have been decided by 10 points or less and that was prior to the Pistons improved play. Miami typically bounces back from losses with a win which I expect but I like the Pistons and the points given the 12.5 point spread.
