Detroit Pistons
The Pistons played well on Monday but still lost by double-digits, at home, to the Spurs.
That’s just how good the Spurs are going now. They played to a 130 offensive rating, turned it over fewer than nine percent of their possessions and even won the offensive rebounding battle.
Detroit shot close to 55 percent and turned it over less than ten percent of the time, themselves. Blake Griffin had 34 points with the Spurs playing two big men. He was hitting shots from all over the field. The team only shot 9-for-32 from 3-point range, though.
Thing is, that’s kind of just normal for the Pistons, who simply don’t have any good outside shooters. Griffin was one of three players to hit multiple triples. Reggie Bullock went 3-for-12 and Luke Kennard went 2-for-4.
Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles got a pleasantly surprising win on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak and give them their second victory since losing LeBron James on Christmas Day.
The Lakers beat the best home team in the Western Conference, the Dallas Mavericks, with a 107–97 win. Brandon Ingram out-scored Luka Doncic, 29–27, and the Lakers’ defense turned the Mavs over eighteen times in the win.
Kyle Kuzma returned from injury and played 37 difference-making minutes for the Lakers, despite only shooting 4-for-20. But just having another aggressive offensive threat and outside shooter on the floor made all the difference for the rest of the Lakers.
From now, through January 21, the Lakers will play a game every other day. They hope James will be back before then. He’s set to re-evaluated this weekend with the hope of returning to play next week.
Until then, and even afterward, they’ll take what they can get out of Michael Beasley, who is back with the team after the loss of his mother. He scored thirteen points in ten minutes against Dallas.
