Friday, March 11th, 2022, the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics meet for the fourth and final time this season. Boston is up 2-1 on the season series with wins on February 4th (102-93) and 26th (113-104) while Detroit prevailed 112-111 just prior to the break on February 16th.
The Pistons’ win versus the Celts ended their nine-game win streak with their lengthy, athletic wings causing Boston some issues and they’ll be trying to end another Boston win streak in this match.
Both teams last played Wednesday with the Pistons losing 108-114 to the Bulls while the Celtics beat the Hornets 115-101.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Pistons taking two of the three contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Pistons 245 times of their 385 regular-season matches.
Detroit Pistons
If there was a perfect argument for why the NBA still needs to change the process used for the NBA Draft Lottery these Pistons might offer the best argument.
Having essentially lost enough to secure a top draft pick, now the Pistons are reveling in playing spoiler and have won six of their last nine matches and were competitive in all three losses.
In the loss to the Bulls, they looked good for another win but collapsed in the latter stages of the final frame and ultimately scored only 17 points in the final frame. Whether that loss was by design or credit goes to the Bulls is the question.
Rookie Cade Cunningham continues his recent hot streak with 22 points, six assists, and four rebounds but also coughed up the ball six times. Six of his teammates scored in double figures but no one registered more than 12 points.
Specifically, Jerami Grant, Saddiq Bey, and Kelly Olynyk all scored 12 while Saben Lee, Marvin Bagley III, and Hamidou Diallo scored 10.
Hamidou Diallo (finger) and Rodney McGruder (hamstring) both got injured in the last game making them questionable as is Killian Hayes. Isaiah Steward (knee) and Frank Jackson (back) are out indefinitely.
Boston Celtics
Every season a team emerges in the second half and rides the momentum into the postseason. The trick is not peaking too early. Last season that team was the Hawks and they rode that momentum all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals.
This season it’s the Celtics who are 23-8 since the New Year and have won 15 of their last 17 matches with losses only against the Pistons and Pacers in that stretch.
Jayson Tatum is playing so well he’s even getting some buzz for MVP but it’s too late in the season for him to overtake the two big men who are favored to win (Joel Embiid or Nikola Jokic).
In the win versus the Hornets, they got the advantage of playing a tired Hornets team who played the night prior but stayed focused learning from their prior mistakes of taking a sub-par team for granted.
All five starters plus Derrick White (11) scored in double-digits with Tatum feasting scoring 44 points on 16 of 24 from the field, 6 of 9 from deep, and 6 of 6 from the charity stripe.
Robert Williams III (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Al Horford (10 points, 10 rebounds) delivered double-doubles.
Aaron Nesmith (ankle) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Detroit is 8-0-1 ATS in their last 9 games.
- Boston is 8-1 SU in their last 9 games at home.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Detroit’s last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 7 of Boston’s last 9 games.
Free Detroit Pistons vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Boston already took the Pistons for granted once, they won’t do it again and with several Pistons questionable for Friday they should get the easy win. That said, I like Detroit to keep it closer than the 14 point spread.
