Wednesday, November 9th, 2022, the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics playing the first of four scheduled meetings. The Celtics will host on November 12th and February 6th while the Pistons will host the final meeting on February 15th.
Both teams last played Monday with the Pistons defeating the fellow tanking Thunder 112-103 while the Celtics won an entertaining match 109-106 versus the equally exciting Grizzlies
Last season, the teams played four times with the Celtics taking three of the four contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Pistons 246 times in their 386 regular-season matches.
Detroit Pistons
Playing in one of the two ‘Tanker Bowls’ on Monday the Pistons rallied from a 15-point half-time deficit to go on a 64-40 run of their own and pull out the victory versus the Thunder.
Saddiq Bey led the scoring effort with 25 points while three of his teammates posted double-doubles including Cade Cunningham (21 points, 11 rebounds), rookie Jaden Ivey (15 points, 11 rebounds), and Isaiah Stewart (11 points, 12 rebounds).
That latter trio accounted for 34 boards that allowed the Pistons to win the battle of the glass 58-46 and in an oddity both clubs grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.
Overall, the Pistons allow 117.5 points per game ranking 26th and their opponents are shooting 48.1 percent from the field (26th) and 34.3 percent from the perimeter (18th).
Offensively, Detroit scores 107.7 points per game (28th) while they shoot 42,6% from the field (28th) and 33.7% from the perimeter (24th).
Alec Burks (foot) is questionable for Wednesday while Marvin Bagley III (knee) is out indefinitely.
Boston Celtics
The J-men were the story in Memphis on Monday as they held on to beat the Grizzlies behind the efforts of Jayson Tatum who dropped 39 points, three rebounds, and two assists while Jaylen Brown added 21 points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
The duo took 45 of the Celtics’ 82 shots! Marcus Smart (15 points on 11 shots) and Malcolm Brogdon (eight points on 12 shots) were the only other Celts to take double-digit shot attempts.
Al Horford was the other player to score in double-figures (15) on an economical 6 of 7 from the field but it begs the question of how happy the J’s teammates will continue to be if they’re getting under seven attempts per match.
Boston scores the third most points with 117.8 per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 37.7% from the perimeter both of which ranks sixth-best.
On defense, they allow 114.4 points per game ranking 18th.
Opponents are shooting 47.0 percent from the field which finds the Celtics keeping company with the Mavericks, Raptors, and Warriors in 19th (or 22nd, depending on how full your cup is) while the 36.6% perimeter percentage ranks 19th.
Luke Kornet (personal) was upgraded to probable. Robert Williams III (knee) is out indefinitely. Danilo Gallinari (ACL) is lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Pistons are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games against Boston.
- The Celtics are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Detroit’s last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Boston’s last 6 games.
Free Detroit Pistons vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
The effort in Memphis by the Celtics seemed to signal a shift toward getting back the defensive principles that made them so devastating to play last season.
Perhaps the news Robert Williams III is dunking in week six of his rehab offered a spark and got his teammates thinking about expediting cleaning things up on that side of the hardwood.
William’s rehab window was projected between eight and 12 weeks (before he would ramp up activity) but this news implies he’s well ahead of schedule. Not that the Celtics will use anything but precaution with their defensive stopper, especially while the team is winning.
Or — it could simply be the team reviewed the first 10 games and defense became the priority to fix in this next 10-game segment.
Regardless of the reason, let’s see if the same defensive intensity they brought in Memphis is present versus the ‘tanking’ Pistons. I’m leaning to YES in that regard but 11.5 is a massive spread and a differential they’ve only hit twice this season (Wizards, Knicks).
In their three wins last season they won twice by nine and once by 11 while their lone loss came with Williams out of the lineup!
Detroit may very well be tanking – – but this is a litmus test for the youngsters which Dwane Casey will have them pumped up for. See how the Pistons have dominated the Raptors since Casey took the helm for evidence of the latter 😉
So I like the Celts to win but the Pistons to keep it just under the spread.
