On Wednesday, February 2nd, the Denver Nuggets, and Utah Jazz will meet for the fourth and final time this season. Utah has won all three prior meetings on October 25th (122-110), January 5th (115-109), and January 16th (125-102).
Utah has lost five in a row and hasn’t played since Sunday when they got pummelled 106-126 by the Wolves. Denver arrives to complete a back-to-back set having been routed on the front side (115-130) by the Wolves.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Jazz winning two of the three contests. The Jazz holds the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 120 of their 204 matches
Denver Nuggets
The loss to the Wolves highlighted just how much impact Nikola Jokic has for the Nuggets. While he rested on the bench the Wolves went on a 25-7 run and Denver never fully recovered.
It’s easy to get lost in everything Jokic does offensively, but his presence is also critical on the defensive side of the court.
The run also highlighted precisely how bad the Nuggets bench is and should spark the Nuggets front office to try to bolster that depth at the trade deadline if at all possible.
Jokic flirted with a triple-double yet again posting 21 points, 16 rebounds, and eight assists. He was the only Nuggets player to clear 20 points although four others reached double-digit scoring.
DeMarcus Cousins (foot) is questionable for Wednesday. Jamal Murray (knee) continues to rehab from a torn ACL with hopes of returning this season. Vlatko Cancar (foot) and Michael Porter Jr. (back) are out indefinitely.
Utah Jazz
The first half of the season the Jazz avoided suffering many injuries or players lost to protocols but that’s no longer the case. Joe Ingles suffered a torn ACL and it won’t be surprising if he never plays in Utah again (possibly the NBA given his age).
While Ingles had lost a step and isn’t considered a part of the key core (he was being shopped for trade) his leadership was clear.
Donovan Mitchell (concussion protocol) and Rudy Gobert (calf) have missed the last seven and four games respectively and it appears their old feud may be heating up again.
The latter commented on how Devin Booker plays hard on defense and how the Suns and Warriors have winning habits the Jazz don’t.
It might not be ideal to speak publicly or on social media but Gobert has a point.
Without him specifically in the lineup, the Jazz is 1-8 and the defense is horrid punctuating just how much the center does to make up for lapses (or lack of effort).
With Mitchell ascending the Jazz seemed to focus on adding offensive depth and the moves made also seemed to be catered to who/what the young guard wanted. Now they’re paying the price and it sure seems like the team has taken a big step back defensively.
An oddity is why it’s taking so long for Mitchell to clear protocols as he’s set to miss his ninth consecutive game Wednesday. Gobert is out indefinitely. Hassan Whiteside (back) and Trent Forrest (ankle) are questionable while Danuel House (quarantine) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nuggets are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Jazz are 2-10-1 ATS in their last 13 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 9 of Denver’s last 11 games.
- The Jazz are 0-11 ATS in their last 11 games at home.
Free Denver Nuggets vs. Utah Jazz NBA Analysis:
Because the Nuggets match was essentially over at the half Michael Malone didn’t have to play his starters more than 30 minutes which will help their legs playing on consecutive nights.
Utah, however, has a big rest advantage but with so many members of their core out, I’m leaning toward Denver especially if both Gobert and Whiteside aren’t available to deal with Jokic.
