If you caught any of the preseason games it was clear how happy Nikola Jokic was to have Jamal Murray back. The same can’t be said of his feelings about Michael Porter Jr.
Sure his offense helps but MPJ is still struggling with basics like where to be on the court on both ends which feels like something he could’ve (or should’ve) improved upon while watching games from the bench for a year.
Ultimately, it won’t surprise if MPJ is the player the Nuggets dangle if they look to shore up the team at the deadline and grab a two-way player to push them over the top.
Speaking of two-way players Bruce Brown is going to be a delight on this club with his skill set perfectly suiting Jokic while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope spreads the floor and is strong defensively too.
Michael Malone will ease Murray and MPJ back given how long they were out but I still like the Nuggets to win the Conference. Hey, this team won 48 games without their second and third-best offensive players AND they still posted the sixth-best offense rating.
The fact they’re finally healthy plus upgraded combined with the Warriors and Clippers not pushing their stars minutes has me convinced they’ll top the West ladder.
Utah Jazz
For the youngsters unfamiliar with Danny Ainge the trade he made to send out Rudy Gobert to Minnesota and the haul he got back is specifically why he developed a reputation in Boston.
It was widespread knowledge Ainge used tough bargaining tactics and not only wanted to win trades he wanted to embarrass his counterpart and that led to some prior GMs not wanting to do business with him.
As the Knicks noted his ask for Donovan Mitchell was beyond reasonable. While the Cavs gave up a lot it wasn’t on par with what he demanded from the Knicks.
And that is also part of his rep — if he knows a team really wants something but he can’t get them to overpay for it he’ll get his revenge by making the deal with a rival in a nearby market.
Whatever your thoughts of Ainge are – in one offseason he’s completely shifted the direction of the Jazz and garnered so many draft picks he’s in the same conversation as Sam Presti and the Thunder now.
It’s likely the shopping/trades aren’t complete as Mike Conley, Rudy Gay and possibly Jordan Clarkson become trade deadline fodder for teams looking to add that one extra piece.
