The East’s second-seeded Toronto Raptors and the West’s third-seeded Nuggets aren’t often discussed as NBA title contenders but arguably have two of the deepest teams in the bubble.
Both clubs have secured their seed and first-round opponent with their only objective being to keep their players healthy through this last game.
Denver Nuggets
Although the Nuggets had a chance to win the game versus the Clippers they elected to rest their starters in the final frame. It’s likely Denver would much rather face the Utah Jazz than move up and play the Dallas Mavericks.
If that’s true it was a smart move to align with the easier first-round opponent while simultaneously forcing the Clippers to deal with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis.
Assuming the Nuggets and Clippers advance that choice could prove to be an insightful decision.
While coach Mike Malone has dealt with an injury-depleted roster it’s afforded him the opportunity to give both Michael Porter Jr. and Bol Bol more run and gain experience.
Nikola Jokic registered a double-double of 17 points and 13 assists with seven rebounds while Jerami Grant led his team in scoring with 25 points.
Meanwhile, Gary Harris (hip) and Will Barton (knee) have yet to play and are still listed as out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
While the onus is on health there is something to play for if the Raptors think they’ll be any advantage in overall seeding.
Since the Lakers lost to the Kings if Toronto wins they’ll have the second-best overall record.
Pascal Siakam continues to struggle to find his shot which begs the question if this is a matter of the All-Star struggling to shake off the rust or increased defensive attention is causing problems.
One thing that isn’t in question is how hungry the reserves are to contribute. Chris Boucher produced strong efforts in back to back games.
Boucher followed up his career-high 25 points with 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Kyle Lowry scored 18 of his 19 points in the second quarter and picked up a technical for saying “and one”.
Nick Nurse sat the last game to give associate coach Adrian Griffin an opportunity at the helm with the team fighting back from a double-digit deficit to give Griffin his first coaching victory.
OG Anunoby (knee) and Serge Ibaka (knee) were out while Ibaka, Lowry and VanVleet sat the game prior.

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Jamal Murray loves playing his home town team but the prudent move would be for Malone to sit him and Jokic and for Nurse to do the same on his side.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Nuggets +2
The Nuggets need to make defensive tweaks while the Raptors need to get the offense humming. With opposing mandates it’ll be interesting to see which club succeeds. Denver has taken the majority of the recent meetings so I’ll stick with recency bias.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
