Thursday, February 24th, finds the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings playing for the second of four scheduled meetings this season. The initial match on January 7th was won 121-111 by Denver.
Each team will host another game with Denver also hosting this weekend on February 26th and Sacramento hosting on March 9th. Both teams last played Wednesday, February 16th with the Nuggets defeating the Warriors 117-116 while the Kings lost 118-125 to the Bulls.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Nuggets sweeping the regular-season series. The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Kings in 96 of their 189 matches.
Denver Nuggets
Although the Nuggets have needed to ride the overall prowess of Nikola Jokic they could find themselves getting healthy at precisely the right time.
Heading into the break they won five of their last six matches and 10 of their last 14 showcasing an improving defense. The big news was provided two weeks ago as the team suggested Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. were on course to both return this season.
Murray hasn’t begun contact work yet, however, which means he’s still some time away from returning but just getting him back with a few weeks left in the season to get him in game shape would be huge and MPJ would simply be a bonus.
Denver has some leeway with the eighth easiest strength of schedule remaining. They’ll face 10 top eight seeds and 14 seeds ninth or lower and play only nine road games most of which are one or two-game sets with only one road trip of three games.
Their first six games out of the break are all against teams seeded ninth or lower so they could go on a nice winning streak in this segment and build momentum to finish out the 2021-22 campaign.
Zeke Nnaji (hamstring) and DeMarcus Cousins (illness) are questionable to play Thursday versus the Kings. Vlatko Cancar (fractured foot), and Jamal Murry (ACL) are out indefinitely while Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) is presumed out for the season.
Sacramento Kings
Entering the stretch run the Kings are entirely invested in making the play-in tournament having traded away a blue-chip talent in Tyrese Haliburton to nab Domantas Sabonis and keeping Harrison Barnes.
It’s all or nothing for Sacramento who hasn’t been to the postseason in 15 years so even getting to participate in one play-in game would be considered a successful campaign.
Even getting the 10th seed will require a concerted effort as they currently reside in the 13th seed 3.5 games back of the 10th seed. The good news for Sacramento is the Blazers won’t have Jusuf Nurkic and the Lakers will be without Anthony Davis for at least a month.
They’ll need to surpass the Pelicans and Spurs however who both have a 1.5 game lead over the Kings and they have the ninth most difficult strength of schedule to finish the season.
Of their final 22 games, 13 are on the road where they are 7-21 and nine at home with 13 matches versus top eight seeds plus three against those two teams directly in front of them.
Davion Mitchell (hand) was upgraded to probable while Jeremy Lamb (ankle) is questionable to play Thursday versus the Nuggets. Terence Davis (wrist) is out indefinitely.

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Sacramento Kings NBA Prediction:
Sacramento will get tested immediately as they play consecutive games against the Nuggets to start their stretch run plus five of their first six games on the road including matches against the Spurs and Pelicans.
They’ll need to win the majority of those matches if they want to establish momentum for the climb upward. Unfortunately, I’m not buying stock in this revamped squad having the appropriate talent to reach their goals particularly versus a Nuggets defense that looked stellar pre-break.
