On Sunday, February 27th, the Denver Nuggets, and Portland Trail Blazers will meet for the fourth and final time this season. The Nuggets are up 2-1 thus far winning on November 14th (124-95) and January 13th (140-108) while the Blazers took the November 23rd match (119-100).
The Nuggets played Thursday and Saturday in a home and home series versus the Kings winning both matches while the Blazers played on Thursday getting routed 95-132 by the Warriors.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Nuggets winning two of the three contests. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 101 of their 190 matches.
Denver Nuggets
For the second time in three days, the Nuggets took care of business by defeating the Sacramento Kings. The win on Saturday didn’t come as easily as the game on Thursday but the result was the same.
Nikola Jokic recorded his 16th triple-double of the season with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. Five Nuggets scored in double-figures with Aaron Gordon having one of his better efforts registering 23 points and nine rebounds.
Monte Morris scored 21 and hit some critical shots down the stretch of the match. Will Barton and Bones Hyland were the other double-figure contributors with 13 and 11 respectively.
Also of note, after renewing DeMarcus Cousins to three separate 10-day contracts Denver has signed him to finish the season with the team.
Michael Malone was his coach in Sacramento and the pair had a strong relationship so this deal isn’t that surprising as it gives the Nuggets a backup center to spell Jokic.
Zeke Nnaji (hamstring) is questionable to play Sunday versus the Blazers. Vlatko Cancar (fractured foot), and Jamal Murry (ACL) are out indefinitely while Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) is presumed out for the season.
Portland Trail Blazers
Entering the All-Star break the Blazers had won four games in a row but came back to earth quickly in their first game back getting pounded by the Warriors who put up 132 points while they were held under 100 (95).
It could just be the typical struggle young teams face coming back after an extended break but they won’t get any sympathy from the Nuggets who are keen to pull ahead of the Mavericks in the standings.
If they have intentions of making the play-in tournament they’ll need to take advantage of the easiest strength of schedule of all 30 teams.
If Portland can pick up some wins in their next five games featuring teams seeded seventh and higher they’ll be able to feast in the next 15 games of the schedule where only the Hawks (10th) and Nets (8th) are seeded above 11th.
Jusuf Nurkic will miss the next month with plantar fasciitis. Eric Bledsoe (Achilles) was downgraded to out and Justise Winslow (Achilles) are questionable to play Sunday versus the Nuggets.
Didi Louzada Silva (knee), and Damian Lillard (abdominal) are out indefinitely. Joe Ingles (ACL) and Nassir Little (shoulder) are out for the season.
