Of the four semi-final series the Denver Nuggets were the only team to win both opening home matches. The series hits the road with the Phoenix Suns hosting the next two matches at the Footprint Center.
Denver may be the best-kept secret in the association as the Suns were favored by most to win their semi-final series and you’ll be hard-pressed to find many who picked them to come out of the West (albeit frequent readers know they were my preseason pick).
But after defeating the Suns via a rout the Nuggets followed it up by winning a defensive low-scoring battle. Now Phoenix will need to win four of the next five to win the series and begin with Game 3 on Friday, May 5th.
ATS
The Nuggets are 49-39-1 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 20-23 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the Suns are 44-43-2 against the spread this season. Also, they are 23-20-1 ATS as the home team.
Season Series
The teams split the season series with Denver winning on December 25th in overtime (128-125), and January 11th (126-97), while the Suns won on March 31st (100-93) and April 6th (119-115).
While Durant played in both games the Suns won the only starter who appeared (and just in one of the two matches) was Aaron Gordon while the Suns had their full starting lineup.
Last season the clubs played three times with Phoenix winning two of the three contests. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 102 of their 189 matches.
This is the fifth time the clubs are facing each other in the postseason with Phoenix holding the 3-1 advantage including the most recent meeting in 2021 when the Nuggets were limited without Murray or Porter Jr.
Denver Nuggets
Michael Malone undoubtedly is thrilled with how his team is playing winning a free flowing game and a lockdown defensive battle.
Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic have each delivered a standout performance and showcase why their pick and roll action is one of the most difficult to defend.
Beyond the two superstars what really stood out is how in sync the Nuggets are on both sides of the court with every player making contributions.
A key factor on Monday was how Denver wore down the Suns by attacking the paint (48 to 30) showcasing how their depth will pay dividends.
Stats
On the positive side, Denver possesses one of the two best offenses in the league highlighted by scoring 115.8 points per game ranking 12th. Denver is shooting the best field goal percentage of 50.4% as well as the fourth-best perimeter efficiency of 37.9%.
Denver allows opponents to score 112.5 points per game which ranks eighth while limiting foes to 47.8% from the field and 34.4% from deep ranking 20th and third respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Collin Gillespie PG (OUT—leg fracture)
Phoenix Suns
As the Suns switched schemes to muck things up after the opening loss the toll it took on Kevin Durant and Devin Booker was clear as both looked exhausted in clutch time.
Now Monty Williams will have to figure out how to replace Chris Paul who suffered a groin injury and is out indefinitely. It’s not CP3’s scoring or defense the Suns will miss but presumably this adds yet another task to Booker’s role as he’ll need to carry more playmaking responsibilities.
Getting a superstar talent of the ilk of KD is something every team would thirst for but this is a warning for teams who covet such a star given how it can deplete the roster.
Stats
Phoenix averages 113.6 points per game ranking 17th while shooting 46.7% from the field and 37.4% from the perimeter ranking 23rd and seventh overall.
Defensively opponents score 111.6 points ranking sixth-best. Meanwhile, they limit foes to 46.6% from the field and 35.7% from the perimeter ranking sixth and 11th respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Chris Paul PG (OUT indefinitely— groin)

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
This is a must-win for the Suns who already need to win four of the next five matches to win the series but falling behind 3-0 would put them in a hole no team has ever come back from.
Durant is expending so much energy having to be a factor defensively and while he’s averaging a double-double (26.5 points, 11 rebounds) he needs to be a bigger offensive factor.
This season he shot 40.4 percent from deep but through the initial two matches he’s shooting 20% (3 of 15). Phoenix needs more perimeter shooting overall having shot 24 percent through two games with KD and Book accounting for 7 of the 13 makes.
Oddsmakers favor the Suns who’ll be playing desperate. The caution is Murray, Jokic, and MPJ have yet to simultaenously have a big night. I’m expecting the refs to be a factor so I’ll tentatively roll with the Suns (but won’t be surprised if the Nuggets continue to roll).
