Denver Nuggets
It’s all about Los Angeles in the Western Conference this season but the quiet, pesky Denver Nuggets continue to lurk, just half a game behind the Clippers for second in the West, headed into Friday.

Denver made two minor moves before the Trade Deadline, acquiring Keita Bates-Diop, a wing prospect out of Ohio State, in a move that satisfied the Clint Capela deal, and swapping Malik Beasley for the Wizards’ Jordan McRae. It also added a first round pick in this summer’s upcoming draft.
Neither Bates-Diop nor McRae will play a lot but both are welcomed depth. The Nuggets also freed up some cap space in the process. McRae can score the ball and could come off the bench in a big game and get hot. There wasn’t the need to shake things up any more than Denver did.
At the moment, they are more than welcomed depth, though. They are necessary. Denver has Jamal Murray back but Will Barton, Michael Porter Jr., Jerami Grant, Paul Millsap and Mason Plumlee all missed the last game.
But Denver won anyway. After beating Portland at home, it beat the Jazz, in Utah, the very next night. It will have had two days off going into this game in Phoenix, which means any combination of Barton, Grant and Porter, who are all listed as day-to-day could return.
This will be for the season sweep. The Nuggets have already defeated the Suns thrice this season, though two of the games were by a combined three points. The last time these two got together, in Phoenix, two days before Christmas, Denver won by a deuce thanks to a triple-double from Nikola Jokic.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns will have to completely rely on DeAndre Ayton to matchup with Jokic, given Aron Baynes remains out with a hip injury.
Ayton has a special set of skills and he’s been putting them on display with plenty of playing time without interruption of late.
Ayton has three consecutive games of at least twenty points and twelve rebounds. He’s shot 24-of-40 in his last two games combined. But in this game, more so than his offense, he will have to be tough on defense.
He’s a remarkable athlete with speed and quickness to match Jokic on the perimeter. It’s the mental side of the game he lags behind a mind like Jokic’s though. If the Joker can frustrate him, or get him in foul trouble, it could be over quick.
Otherwise, Phoenix will run and chuck. It has lost four in a row but, at home, it always has a chance to shoot well and pull a mild surprise. That might not sound like much but it was beyond this team’s ceiling up until just this season.
