The conference semi-finals between the second-seed Denver Nuggets and third-seed Minnesota Timberwolves continue on Sunday in the prime TV spot. Denver reminded fans of their title run on Friday with a full 48-minute effort resulting in a 117-90 victory to get into the series.
Season Series
For the past two seasons, these teams have split the season series each winning twice. Denver holds the all-time record between the squads with 89 victories in 145 matches.
This is the third time in franchise history the teams are meeting in the postseason with each side having advanced via a gentleman’s sweep in the first round.
The most recent meeting occurred last season in the Nuggets title run and notably, afterward Michael Malone said it was the toughest test they faced.

If you read my preview prior to Game 3 you know the Nuggets weren’t about to go down without a fight. They delivered on Friday and played inarguably their most complete game of the playoffs.
Although Jamal Murray, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Reggie Jackson are injured they all contributed to the victory. Denver was solid on both ends of the court but they know the job is far from over as they’ll need to replicate that effort in Game 4 to tie up the series.
Nuggets Stats
In the season, Denver ranked fifth offensively (117.8) and eighth defensively (112.3) with a net differential of plus +5.5 ranking fourth overall.
This postseason, the Nuggets rank ninth offensively (111.1) and seventh defensively (109.7) with a plus +1.4 net differential ranking sixth.
Despite their overall placement, the Nuggets aren’t as solid against the spread with a 41-47-2 record through 90 contests.

Minnesota Timberwolves
For the first time in the postseason, the Wolves suffered a loss and it came in front of a packed Target Center who was ready to erupt and party. Instead, they were shut down almost immediately and got a taste of what championship mettle is all about.
They stuck to the same game plan that won them Game 2, but this time the officials weren’t allowing the same gritty defense and it caused them to collect copious early fouls.
More importantly, it seemed to offset the offense that had been rolling and will be the key bulletin point for Chris Finch to adjust on Sunday.
Timberwolves Stats
Through the regular season, Minnesota ranked tied for 17th on offense (120.8) and first defensively (105.5) while they were a plus +15.3 net differential, ranking third overall.
In the playoffs, the Wolves rank fourth offensively (117.6), and fourth defensively (108.4) with a plus +9.2 net differential ranking third overall.
The Wolves rode the middle with a 46-42-1 record against the spread through 89 matches this season.

For the Nuggets they discovered avoiding the press by having various players move the ball, setting multiple screens to free up Murray, and keeping things simple offensively resolved many of their issues.
Chris Finch needs to address why his squad looked like they were stuck in cement offensively. Defense often sparks offense and in the Wolves case that definitely linked to their issues in Game 4.
Unfortunately, the whistle has also dictated much in this series. When they let most things go it benefits the defensive-minded Wolves and when they call the game closer it benefits the Nuggets who play with more finesse.
Just like I did in Game 3, I’m calling for another gut-check performance from the reigning champs. It’s not that I don’t think Minny can win — rather, it’s that I want this series to go the distance for the entertainment.
