The first-round series between the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves can wrap up Sunday, April 23rd as the Nuggets got a stranglehold on the series after their 120-111 victory in Game 3.
The Nuggets are 47-37-1 overall against the spread this season and they are 20-22 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the Timberwolves are 42-45 against the spread this season. Also, they are 20-23 ATS as the home team.
This season the clubs played on four occasions splitting those matches with Minnesota winning the initial meeting 124-111 on January 2nd and February 5th (128-98) while the Nuggets won on January 18th (122-118) and February 7th (146-112).
Additionally, the Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 87 of their 141 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with Denver sweeping the season series.
This is just the second playoff series between the club, with the last meeting in 2004 when the Wolves won 4-1.
The Nuggets can become the first Western team to book their ticket to Round 2, via a sweep of the Wolves. Although Minnesota played better at home and some of the stars found their stroke it still seemed like Denver just flipped a switch when they needed to get back in front.
Each game of the series has featured shining moments from the Nuggets’ big 3 of Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Michael Porter Jr. but in Game 3 it was the play of the others that stood out.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was hot from deep early while Bruce Brown and rookie Christian Braun were critical to extending the Nuggets’ lead while the stars got a rest.
On the positive side, Denver possesses one of the two best offenses in the league highlighted by scoring 115.8 points per game ranking 12th. Denver is shooting the best field goal percentage of 50.4% as well as the fourth-best perimeter efficiency of 37.9%.
Denver allows opponents to score 112.5 points per game which ranks eighth while limiting foes to 47.8% from the field and 34.4% from deep ranking 20th and third respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Collin Gillespie PG (OUT—leg fracture)
After two sub-par performances in Denver, Karl-Anthony Towns found his stroke in the warm confines of the Target Center as he scored 27 points albeit he was still problematic on the defensive end of the court.
Anthony Edwards continued to shine leading the Wolves with 36 points but his efforts were for naught as the decimated reserve unit scored just 10 points to the Nuggets 29.
Minnesota opponents score 115.8 points per game ranking 18th while the Wolves limit them to 47.1% from the field and 36.9% from deep ranking 11th and 24th respectively.
On offense, the Wolves score 115.8 points per game ranking 13th while shooting 49% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking third and 13th respectively.
To summarize the injury report…
- Jaden McDaniels SF (OUT indefinitely —hand)
- Naz Reid, C (OUT indefinitely —wrist, scaphoid fracture)

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Clearly, this series would be more competitive if the Wolves had McDaniels and Reid to help especially defensively. Knowing the Suns will have to play at least once more to close out their series, Michael Malone will have his team primed for the sweep.
In truth, it seems like the Nuggets withstand every Wolves’ run and simply flip a switch to pull ahead or build a lead.
Preseason this Nuggets team was my pick to win the West and nothing has changed — in fact, I think they are building upon their momentum and have yet to show their best.
The oddsmakers clearly have more faith in the Wolves than yours truly, and perhaps this could be a trap game but there’s something about the focus of Joker and Murray which speaks to them knowing this is their time.
