Saturday, April 16th, the sixth-place Denver Nuggets and the third-place Golden State Warriors tip off their first-round Western Conference series.
Denver won the season series 3-1 with victories on December 28th (89-86, February 16th (117-116), and March 7th (131-124) while Golden State won on March 10th (113-102).
The Nuggets have won 100 of the 185 matches played versus the Warriors all-time however the Warriors took the only meeting between the clubs 4-2 in the 2013 first-round series.
Denver Nuggets
Although the Nuggets continue to tease that Jamal Murray or Michael Porter Jr. could return it seems highly unlikely they would attempt something like that.
It’s not like the situation with Curry for the Warriors as Murray hasn’t played all year and MPJ only appeared in nine games before being sidelined with his back issue.
Rather it feels like that is more of a carrot for the fan base to cling to or perhaps hopeful thought in case the Nuggets overachieve in the early rounds.
That’s not to say this series won’t be competitive – it will. Nikola Jokic is a handful and even if the Warriors are functioning at their best won’t be able to stop him.
The question is whether Jokic can get assistance from his others to provide enough scoring to get past the Warriors.
Murray (ACL) and Porter Jr (back) are out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
News that Stephen Curry looked likely to play in the first game of this series had the Warriors faithful in a frenzy. Golden State who began the season neck and neck with the Suns swooned when first Draymond Green got hurt and then Curry went down.
They never panicked though and even while they struggled to capture wins they maintained a home court seed and perhaps more importantly got their youth some quality minutes and experience.
Down the stretch of the season, the Dubs battled to keep the third seed despite the easier first-round opponent being the Jazz instead of the Nuggets.
That’s because the Warriors and Mavericks were vying for the third seed viewing it as a prize since it would align the second round with the more inexperienced Grizzlies (or Timberwolves) and postpone the Suns until the Conference Finals.
There’s no way Jonathan Kuminga would be in the position he is now where he’s carved out postseason minutes for himself had the injuries not occurred.
Similarly, although Jordan Poole had ascended into a Sixth Man role for the team – what Steve Kerr learned while Curry was out is that Poole is a reliable closer and final shot taker.
As for injuries Curry (foot) was upgraded to probable Saturday while James Wiseman (knee) is done for the season.

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
So much of this series will depend on health. Will the rumors and whispers out of Denver regarding Murray continue and more importantly come to fruition?
As for the Warriors, how many minutes will Steph be able to log initially and will he need to sit any games? How close to 100 percent defensively are Draymond Green and Klay Thompson?
And did the late-season rest for Andre Iguodala and Otto Porter Jr. pay dividends in getting them ready for a deep postseason run?’
I’m banking on the Dubs getting the job done but it’ll take six or seven games. For this game, it’s about whether the Dubs (and Steph specifically) are rusty.
