Denver Nuggets
Little can be determined at the halfway point of an NBA season but the top of the Western Conference after the Lakers is particularly tight this year.
Denver, Houston, Utah and the Clippers were all within a half-game of each other when Tuesday’s games began. The Jazz and Clippers won and the Rockets lost, and so fell a little further behind.
But with the Lakers more than five clear, it means that those four could be competing for three spots that earn home court advantage in the first round and one that guarantees it in the second.

The Nuggets have a chance to pick up a couple of wins on Wednesday and Thursday with a back-to-back spot against the Hornets at home, followed by this game on the road against the Warriors.
Paul Millsap has missed three games in a row with a sore knee and he’s been ruled out for a fourth on Wednesday against Charlotte. The thirteen-year pro is in the final season of his three-year, $90 million contract he signed with the Nuggets in the summer of 2017. A former second round pick out of Louisiana Tech, Millsap has done well for himself and will have made over $180 million in his playing career when this season is finished.
Jerami Grant and Michael Porter Jr. have both been given more of an opportunity with Millsap sidelined, making the Nuggets younger and quicker but perhaps less refined on both sides of the ball.
Grant has scored in double-digits in each of the last three games Millsap has missed and added five blocks. Porter has been less consistent and actually only played three minutes two games ago against the Cavs. That young man will improve long into his NBA career, though.
Millsap won’t miss too much more time, however. The fact that the Nuggets can give him a week or two to get right and not endure too much of a drop-off positions them well in the regular season playoff chase.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors have been stuck on nine wins since December 28 and they lost their ninth in a row on Tuesday, by twenty-seven points, at home, to the Mavericks.
Luka Doncic had a light night for Dallas, scoring just twenty in twenty-seven minutes. Dwight Powell led all scorers with twenty-one and Boban Marjanovic had a double-double off the bench for Dallas.
In Atlanta, the Hawks beat the Suns on Tuesday for their ninth win of the season. Trae Young, Kevin Huerter and John Collins combined for eighty-one points in the win. And now Golden State is in danger of becoming the last team in the NBA to reach ten wins.
Atlanta doesn’t play again until Friday so this could be the Warriors’ last chance to avoid finishing last in the race to double-digits.
