*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing on Wednesday, February 22nd. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, February 23rd.
Denver Nuggets
As the Nuggets begin the stretch run they do so seated atop the Western Conference with a significant lead over the teams chasing them. Memphis is the closest sitting five games back with the Kings and Clippers trailing by eight and nine respectively.
That’s a ton of padding for the Nuggets, especially considering teams have between only 25 and 21 games remaining to make up that difference.
Stats
Denver possesses the best offense in the league highlighted by scoring 117.1 points per game ranking sixth. Denver is shooting the best field goal percentage of 51.2% as well as the top-ranked perimeter efficiency of 39.2%.
To be sure, defensively the Nuggets are improving. So far, they allow opponents to score 112.7 points per game which ranks 13th while limiting foes to 48.0% from the field and 34.9% from deep ranking 23rd and eighth respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Jamal Murray PG (questionable – knee inflammation)
- Aaron Gordon PF (questionable – rib contusion)
- Zeke Nnaji PF (OUT- shoulder)
- Jack White (OUT – ACL recovery)
- Collin Gillespie PG (OUT – leg fracture)
Cleveland Cavaliers
Entering the stretch run the Cavaliers are sitting on the fourth rung in the East two games back of the third-place 76ers and 2.5 games up on the (don’t sleep on them) revamped Nets.
Cleveland has the fourth easiest remaining schedule which will help their cause with 21 games left to play.
Season Stats
Offensively, Cleveland scores 111.8 points per game ranking 26th while shooting 48.9% from the field and 36.3% on the perimeter ranking fifth and 12th respectively.
Cleveland tops the league for opponent scoring limiting foes to an average of 106.1 points per game. Cavs opponents shoot 46.5% from the field and 36.6% from deep ranking sixth and 20th.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Ricky Rubio PG (questionable — injury management)

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
Murray was looking much closer to his pre-injury self prior to missing the last six games due to knee inflammation so it’s a bit concerning he remains on the injury report. However, Gordon is also still listed so it could just be simple gamesmanship by Michael Malone.
With the signing of Reggie Jackson from the buy-out market, Denver isn’t in as much of a rush if Murray needs more time to make sure he’s fully rested and healthy.
While the pundits are jumping over themselves to declare the revamped Suns, Clippers, ninth-place Warriors, and 13th-place Lakers as the potential team to come out of the West I’m sticking with my preseason pick of the Nuggets (as long as Murray is healthy).
In that mindset, the fact the Cavaliers are favored is sort of surprising so I’ll happily take the points.
