On Thursday, April 28th, the Dallas Mavericks, and Utah Jazz continue their first-round series with Game 6 on tap. The Mavericks lead 3-2 and will be seeking to clinch the series and move on to face the Golden State Warriors who clinched on Wednesday.
The clubs split the 2021-22 season series with Utah winning 120-116 on December 25th and 114-109 on February 25th while Dallas won 111-103 on March 7th and 114-100 on March 27th.
Utah holds the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 106 of their 183 regular-season matches but the Mavericks possess the postseason edge (6-3) having won two prior first-round series in 1986 (3-1) and 2001 (3-2)
Dallas Mavericks
Recent history will be on the minds of the Mavericks who led the Clippers last year 3-2 prior to losing the next two games and the series. They played Game 6 at home last season whereas this year they’re on the road but with the same intention to close out the series.
It seemed illogical to have superstar Luka Doncic play in Game 4 at Utah especially when the Mavericks lost the game, but in hindsight, it was the right move by Jason Kidd as it allowed the youngster to rediscover his rhythm.
In Game 5, he delivered a double-double of 33 points and 13 rebounds. Jalen Brunson continues to deliver quality performances offering 24 points, five rebounds, and four assists although his 3-pointer was off (1 of 7).
Dorian Finney-Smith chipped in 13 points as the only other Maverick to reach double-digit scoring.
While the early Doncic teams were known primarily for their offensive prowess, in this Jason Kidd iteration, the Mavericks’ identity centers on defense.
Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) is the Mavericks player listed on the injury report and is out indefinitely.
Utah Jazz
One major issue for the Jazz in this series is how drastically their 3-point shooting has fallen off from a regular-season average of 36 percent to rank dead last out of the playoff squads shooting 27.8 percent from deep.
Specifcally, they’ve only shot above 32 percent in one match (Game 2):
- Game 1: 7 of 22 for 31.8%
- Game 2: 11 of 29 for 37.9%
- Game 3: 9 of 28 for 32.1%
- Game 4: 10 of 35 for 28.6%
- Game 5: 3 of 30 for 10.0%
The latter performance was the worst 3-point shooting by any team in postseason history (with a minimum of 25 attempts).
The reason the Jazz’s poor perimeter shooting is important in this series is they typically attempt 86.2 field goals with 40.3 coming from the perimeter or 46.7 percent of their shot attempts.
Donovan Mitchell had an MRI after Game 5 to check out both his hamstring and quad but there isn’t damage that would require him to miss games. He’ll play through the soreness and is listed as probable for Thursday.
The Jazz superstar scored just nine points on 4 of 15 shooting in Game 5. Rudy Gobert was the only starter to reach double-figures with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jordon Clarkson led the team with 20 points.
Trent Forrest (foot) is out indefinitely. Udoka Azubuike (ankle) is done for the season.

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Utah Jazz NBA Analysis:
The Jazz (and Donovan Mitchell) seem to be destined to lose and begin what will be an inevitable offseason restructuring with questions on whether Utah can move forward and function with both Mitchell and Gobert. Coach Quin Snyder will also be a focus with many projecting he’ll end up with the Lakers.
Now that the Mavericks are healthy and Doncic has shaken off the rust expect the Mavericks to learn from the mistakes of last year and with the opportunity to close out (even on the road) getting the job done.
