On Thursday, April 21st, the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz change settings as the clubs continue their first-round playoff series all knotted at a game apiece.
Utah won the opening game of the series 99-93 then lost the second match 104-110. Star Luka Doncic has yet to play in a game for the Mavericks.
The clubs split the 2021-22 season series with Utah winning 120-116 on December 25th and 114-109 on February 25th while Dallas won 111-103 on March 7th and 114-100 on March 27th.
Utah holds the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 106 of their 183 regular-season matches but the Mavericks possess the postseason edge (6-3) having won two prior first-round series in 1986 (3-1) and 2001 (3-2)
Dallas Mavericks
Jalen Brunson put on a show for the hometown Mavericks fans scoring a career-best 41 points along with eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. to lead his team and more importantly collect a win that takes extra pressure off Luka Doncic returning too soon.
With the series shifted to Utah for two games, there are questions on whether Doncic will appear in either game in Utah. ]ason Kidd is playing with house money and can afford to wait. In essence, the series has shifted to the best three out of five.
Maxi Kleber also had a big night scoring 25 points and nailing eight of his 11 perimeter attempts. The other two who reached double-digits were Spencer Dinwiddie with 17 and Reggie Bullock with 11 points.
Doncic is listed as questionable while Frank Ntilikina (illness) is out Thursday. Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) is out indefinitely.
Utah Jazz
For those who’ve wondered all season why the Jazz was a team, no one was banking on winning the title or excited about, the second game of this series pinpointed why.
The depth of talent is unquestionable with All-Star Donovan Mitchell, multi-time Defensive Player of the Year – Rudy Gobert, sniper Bojan Bogdanovic, and former All-Star Mike Conley.
Each offered hints of why this team is headed to be broken up postseason: Mitchell scored 34 points but needed 30 shots to get there while Conely shot 0 of 7 failing to score a single point.
Gobert was a beast on the glass with 17 rebounds but his teammates continue to ignore considering utilizing more pick and roll scoring played with him taking just five shots in this game (albeit that’s better the single field goal attempt in Game 1).
Bogdanovic offered 25 points but was off from the perimeter 1 of 4 and led the team with a negative plus/minus of -19. Kidd, clearly, emphasized closing out on him on the perimeter to force shorter shot attempts and to attack him on the defensive side of the court.
Udoka Azubuike (ankle) is done for the season.

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Utah Jazz NBA Analysis:
If the Jazz were as good as their salary then no one would be worried about whether they can get out of the first round against the Mavs without Doncic.
That this team has barely won a game against the Luka-less Mavs points to how far off they are from winning the series — or for that matter spending time as a unit next season.
Surely, this has only served to put flashing lights on a team that no longer looks comfortable playing together.
As for Dallas, there is absolutely zero reasons to bring him back for this game unless he was 100 percent healthy which he’s not.
Utah should win, but the Mavericks will keep it close.
