Game two of the Western Conference semi-finals between the fourth-seeded Dallas Mavericks and top-seeded Phoenix Suns tips off on Wednesday, May 4. Phoenix took the early series lead with a 121-114 victory.
Both teams won their first-round series 4-2 with the Mavericks defeating the Utah Jazz and the Phoenix Suns beating the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Suns swept the Mavericks in the 2021-22 season series 3-0 with victories on November 17th (105-98), 19th (112-104), and January 20th (109-101).
Notably, Luka Doncic only played in one of the three matches between the teams while Deandre Ayton missed one of the contests.
The Suns hold the all-time advantage having won 94 times of the club’s 168 regular-season meetings versus the Mavericks.
This is the third time the clubs are playing in the postseason with each team having won a prior series. The Suns won the 2005 semi-finals 4-2 while the Mavericks won the 2006 Conference finals 4-2.
Dallas Mavericks
Luka Doncic was spectacular but needed his teammates and didn’t get much help. Of the four semi-finals series, Dallas was the one underdog who I felt didn’t play up to their potential in Game 1 and still has another gear to click.
Doncic was the exception dropping a double-double of 45 points and 12 rebounds along with eight assists in the series opener.
Maxi Kleber was a spark with 19 points including shooting 5 of 8 from deep while Dorian Finney-Smith (15) and Jalen Brunson (13) were the only other double-figure contributors.
If I had to guess, I think this series is going to get more physical as it progresses.

Jae Crowder offered the groin kick early in this one that led to a flagrant but my assumption is based more on Dallas coming out more physical in Game 2.
Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot) remains out with no definitive return date.
Phoenix Suns
Simply put, the Suns looked like the more talented and much deeper team in Game 1. Their lone gaffe was getting up 21 points with 10 minutes to play and kicking into cruise mode.
When your opponent has an otherworldly talent like Doncic – that’s not something you can mess around with and it’s doubtful they make a lapse in decision like that again in this series.
Coach Monty Williams elected to guard Doncic in single coverage and lockdown everyone else and other than Maxi Kleber were successful.
Deandre Ayton shot 12 of 20 for 25 points with eight rebounds and is going to be a massive problem for Jason Kidd to adjust for moving forward because they don’t have anyone who can stop him.
All five Suns starters registered double-figure scoring including Devin Booker (23 points, nine rebounds, eight assists) and Chris Paul (19) plus Cameron Johnson scored 17 off the bench.
Dario Saric (knee) remains out with no definitive return date.

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
The Suns won the battle of the glass (51-36) including offensive boards (13-7). Both teams shot well from outside with Dallas shooting 41 percent (16 of 39) while the Suns shot 39.3 percent (11 of 28).
Dissecting the areas of the game that the Mavericks won has to be concerning for Kidd given they protected the ball with only nine turnovers of which Doncic had five. Plus Dallas also won the paint (44-38) and fast-break (12-11) scoring but weren’t close to winning Game 1.
The final score isn’t indicative of the match or how dominant Phoenix was. Doncic will need Brunson, Spencer Dinwiddie and the other supporting cast to step up if they have a chance to make this a series.
I never felt the Jazz were a strong defensive squad whereas the Suns are a much tougher test for Dallas and that’s why I expect them to come out and be more physical from the tip.
Regardless, unless Doncic drops a 50 or 60-point triple-double the Mavericks will be headed back to Dallas needing to reciprocate with wins at home.
One caveat – check the referee assignments (posted the morning of the game) — if Scott Foster is officiating bet the bank on Dallas as Chris Paul’s teams are 0-14 in the last 14 playoff games Foster has officiated.
