Game one of the Western Conference semi-finals between the fourth-seeded Dallas Mavericks and top-seeded Phoenix Suns tips off on Monday, May 2nd.
Both teams won their first-round series 4-2 with the Mavericks defeating the Utah Jazz and the Phoenix Suns beating the New Orleans Pelicans.
Phoenix will host Game 1 today, Game 2, Wednesday, May 4, *Game 5, Tuesday, May 10, and *Game 7, Sunday, May 15 while Dallas Mavericks will host Game 3, Friday, May 6, Game 4, Sunday, May 8, and *Game 6, Thursday, May 12 (*if necessary).
The Suns swept the Mavericks in the 2021-22 season series 3-0 with victories on November 17th (105-98), 19th (112-104), and January 20th (109-101).
Notably, Luka Doncic only played in one of the three matches between the teams while Deandre Ayton missed one of the contests.
The Suns hold the all-time advantage having won 94 times of the club’s 168 regular-season meetings versus the Mavericks.
This is the third time the clubs are playing in the postseason with each team having won a prior series. The Suns won the 2005 semi-finals 4-2 while the Mavericks won the 2006 Conference finals 4-2.
Dallas Mavericks
Like the Suns, the Mavericks got through the first round without the services of their superstar for three of the six games.
When he did return Doncic was his ever-productive self averaging a double-double of 29 points and 10.7 rebounds plus 5.7 assists, and 1.3 steals.
While Luka was sidelined the Mavericks’ defense remained their calling card with Jalen Brunson rising to take over the offensive needs averaging 27.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists while shooting 36.4 percent from deep on 5.5 attempts.
In the three meetings versus the Suns, the Mavericks hadn’t yet made the trade for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans so Phoenix will need to adjust to their presence and the increased offense they’ve brought to Dallas.
Although he played just once against the Suns this season Doncic was his ever-effective self registering 28 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.
Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot) remains out with no definitive return date.
Phoenix Suns
Devin Booker missed three games in the first round with a hamstring injury returning to play 32 minutes in the Game 6 clinching game posting 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
His backcourt partner Chris Paul was literally perfect hitting all 14 of his field goals and four free throws to register 33 points, adding five rebounds, eight assists, and a steal.
In the season series, Devin Booker averaged 23.6 points, five rebounds, and 2.3 assists while Chris Paul averaged 15 points, 13 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals.
The Suns lived in the paint versus the Pelicans scoring 50.7 points which ranked second in the first round.
Dario Saric (knee) remains out with no definitive return date.

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
Turnovers could prove to be a key in this series as the Suns feasted on scoring off turnovers (21.7) in the first round while the Mavericks protected the ball and limited the Jazz to 8.5 points off turnovers which was the best by any team in the first round.
After the trade, the Mavericks utilized more small-ball units but they’ll need to figure out how to handle Deandre Ayton who averaged a double-double (13.5 points, 15 rebounds) in two games versus Dallas albeit producing better in one of those matches.
Notably, both of those games occurred prior to the trade so Ayton was registering these stats with Kristaps Porzingis playing for Dallas. Dwight Powell likely gets the assignment and will need to do his best to keep the Suns’ center off the glass.
This matchup is much closer than the team’s record and with a player of Doncic’s caliber he can win a game or two for the Mavs all on his own.
Phoenix is much deeper though and they may need to utilize that reserve unit to tire out Dallas’ starters who’ll more than likely get the majority of the minutes.
