The nightcap of Sunday, May 15th finds the fourth-seeded Dallas Mavericks and top-seeded Phoenix Suns tipping off to determine who’ll move onto the Western Conference Finals to face the Golden State Warriors.
Unlike the Celtics – Bucks this semi-final series has been all about home cooking with each team only winning on their home courts.
Dallas Mavericks
Ironically, Luka Doncic’s production has been better in Phoenix than it has in Dallas but that is also a key to why the Mavericks are 3-0 at home as his teammates playing better in Dallas.
When the Mavericks move the ball it results in balanced scoring and they’ve simply played more at ease at home. That’s why the oddsmakers are leaning into the Suns as being the favorite on their home court.
Factor in experience and the Suns are mostly unchanged since last season so even their youngsters are familiar with the pressure of closing out a series.
Not to mention the experience differential with Chris Paul (141), Jae Crowder (106), and JaVale McGee (73) who have a combined 320 playoff games to their credit.
In comparison, the 14 active Mavericks have a cumulative 289 games of experience with most of those coming during their tenure with Dallas and never advancing out of the first round until this season.
Doncic led the way in Game 6 with a double-double of 33 points and 11 rebounds plus eight assists and four steals. Reggie Bullock (19), Jalen Brunson (18), and Spencer Dinwiddie (15) were the other double-figure contributors.
Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot) remains out with no definitive return date.
Phoenix Suns
Since turning 37 Chris Paul hasn’t appeared to be the same player he’s been the past few seasons. In fairness, dealing with the length of Dallas hasn’t been easy for the point guard and he was hit by what could easily be considered a biased whistle in Dallas.
Still, the veteran hasn’t come close to his usual brilliance turning the ball over 18 times since his birthday with 21 assists while scoring 37 points in those four games. Not exactly the dominant leadership the Suns have come to trust.
Having played in seven prior Game 7’s the Point God knows what to expect having recorded a 3-4 record in those close-out games but the wins all came in first-round series.
Something coach Monty Williams needs to utilize more is the pick and roll sets between Paul and Deandre Ayton. In Game 6, it was Ayton who led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Devin Booker (19) and Paul (13) were the only other double-figure scorers.
Dario Saric (knee) is out for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
Aside from the obvious issues of neither team performing well on the road there are key differences in wins and losses. Dallas likes to control the pace and get up a barrage of 3-pointers.
The Suns are more inclined to push the pace but the Mavericks have foregone collecting offensive rebounds in favor of setting up their transition defense which has produced positive results – – at least at home.
Turnovers are another key as the Suns have struggled to hang onto the ball. In their three wins, the Suns have 37 turnovers (average 12.3) whereas they’ve coughed up the ball 56 times in their three losses, or an average of 18.6 times.
Jason Kidd and the Mavericks have figured something out about the Suns, particularly in how they are guarding Chris Paul, but unless someone other than Luka Doncic shows up beside the Mavs superstar Phoenix will have the decided advantage.
I’m betting on the Suns getting the victory, and while every win in this series has been by seven or more points I’m guessing this game will be closer than the spread.
