The 2022-23 NBA season tips off for the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, October 19th. The Western Conference rivals are both coveting a championship run.
The teams last played each other in the playoffs when the Mavericks shocked the top-ranked Suns pummeling them in Game 7 to move onto the Western Conference Finals.
Dallas played just a trio of preseason games registering a 2-1 record with victories versus the Thunder and Jazz and a loss to the Magic. Phoenix played four preseason matches losing to the Adelaide 36ers, Nuggets, and Kings while defeating the Lakers.
Last season, Phoenix swept the three-game regular-season series versus Dallas and hasn’t lost to them (in season) since November 20, 2019, currently holding a nine-game win streak versus the Mavericks.
The Suns hold the advantage all-time having won 94 times of the club’s 168 meetings.
Dallas Mavericks
In his previous four seasons, it was typical for Luka Doncic to show up to camp out of game condition and use the early season to get in shape.
Part of the reason why is the star plays for his national team so while most players were getting some time off he was still playing and clearly last year based on the extra weight he carried he clearly embellished at the dinner table.
But after getting to the Conference Finals and just missing out on reaching the Finals Doncic arrived at camp in the best shape of his life.
Dallas played the fewest preseason games and head coach, Jason Kidd kept his star’s minutes low likely to make up for his busy summer playing Euro ball.
As for moves, the Mavs traded for Christian Wood and signed JaVale McGee but lost their second-best player Jalen Brunson in free agency who didn’t even allow them an interview to counter the Knicks’ offer.
Many analysts have the Mavs improving their win total this season and Doncic is favored to win MVP. I’m not in that camp. Sure, Spencer Dinwiddie can fill part of the void left by Brunson, and Tim Hardaway Jr. is back but this team still feels short on depth.
Undoubtedly, Wood will fill up the stat sheet but he’ll give up just as many points on the opposite side of the floor which is probably why Kidd doesn’t want to start him.
Phoenix Suns
.No team experienced as much scrutiny as the Suns as the offseason began. Phoenix not only lost in the semi-finals – they imploded.
Rumors circled that Chris Paul possibly had COVID but even in the first round it seemed Willie Green had figured out the key to stopping the Suns was to force CP3 to work. Jose Alvarado defended him full court and the Pels forced him to defend in order to tire out the vet.
What Paul has done for several years now is run the offense but wait until the second half and typically the final quarter to make his mark. Now that teams know they can disrupt the Suns via this strategy it’s likely to be used across the board.
Additionally, the Robert Sarver decision came down suspending him for a year, and subsequently, he elected to sell the team.
Further issues occurred with talks between Jae Crowder and management who wanted to move Cam Johnson into the starting rotation so Crowder demanded a trade and is away from the team.

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
It’s understandable why analysts would peg the Suns to be a home-court seed given they recorded the best overall record last season and have been one of the stronger teams the past two seasons.
By the same token, I’ll direct you to the Utah Jazz who was great in-season but failed to make a mark in the postseason. Phoenix relies on a 37-year-old not named LeBron who is barely 6′ to carry much of the load and I’m just not sure that is sustainable.
Plus, regardless of what they say the relations between Deandre Ayton and Monty Williams are fractured and the team will hear it on every opposing court as they toss shade at how they imploded versus the Mavs.
It’s a tough game to predict because the Mavs likely need time to get their defense rolling and I do think the Suns will ultimately fall down the West’s ladder.
That said, the Suns are at home and at least for this match have the motivation to of revenge for Game 7 on their minds.
