Friday, March 18th, the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers play for the second and final occasion of this season. The Mavericks won the initial contest on February 4th (107-98).
Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Mavericks beating the Nets 113-111 via a Hollywood plot Spencer Dinwiddie revenge game-winner while the 76ers defeated the Cavaliers 118-114 in a tough battle.
Last season the clubs played twice with the 76ers winning both contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record with 41 wins in 80 matches versus the 76ers.
Dallas Mavericks
Since the trade occurred sending Kristaps Porzingis to Washington for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans the Mavericks have experimented with a smaller lineup to great success. Dinwiddie made his Mavericks debut on February 15th appearing in 12 games with the team registering a 10-2 record in those matches.
The guard was on the trade block because the Wizards were keen to move him in a similar fashion as the Mavericks wanted to get Porzingis off their books and roster.
In hindsight, Dinwiddie has become arguably the best trade deadline pickup of this season. He’s averaging 17.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in the 12 games with Dallas shooting 50 percent from the field and 43.1 percent from the perimeter.
It’s the timely buckets that have Mavs fans raving however as he demonstrated last week hitting three critical buckets versus the Celtics and the game winner in Brooklyn.
Now that Luka has a reliable secondary option it’s freeing him up from having to carry the entirety of the offensive load while Dinwiddie also offers options to handle playmaking.
Reggie Bullock (personal) was downgraded to out while Marquese Chriss (knee) is questionable for Friday versus the 76ers. Theo Pinson (finger) and Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) are out indefinitely.
Philadelphia 76ers
It’s been a rough go lately for Joel Embiid who witnessed Houdini Harden emerge versus the Nets after the duo had got out to a hot start. Suffice to say the honeymoon in Philly is over with Doc Rivers realizing Daryl Morey gave up much of their depth (and reliable scoring/rebounding options) in the trade.
The team is 2-2 through the last four matches needing overtime to beat the Magic and barely edging past the reeling Cavaliers. As per usual, Embiid has carried the majority of the offensive load but his efficiency has been up and down.
He took a hard fall in the match versus the Nuggets that looked scary. His leg bent awkwardly and he hit the court hard. Although he played in the match versus Cleveland he might miss this game due to a sore back which likely links back to that fall.

Now, the Mavericks arrive with Luka Doncic putting up ridiculous stats with his Mavericks looking like a much better bet to go deep in the playoffs, and if he leads the Mavs to a sweep of the 76ers how much does that impact Joel’s MVP resume — IF he even plays!
