Sunday, January 30th the Dallas Mavericks playing the Orlando Magic for the second and final time this season. Dallas won the initial meeting 108-92 on January 15th.
The Mavericks are playing a back-to-back set having beat the Pacers 132-105 on Saturday while the Magic played Friday routing the Pistons 119-103.
Last season, the squads met twice with Dallas winning both contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 39 of their 66 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
Although the Mavericks got the win on Saturday it may have come at a grave cost as Kristaps Porzingis had to leave the match due to pain in his knee. The same knee he had surgery on and he isn’t traveling with the team to Orlando.
The game featured Rick Carlisle’s first time back in Dallas but it was his old team who collected the easy win.
The coach and his former superstar Luka Doncic famously didn’t see eye to eye so there was motivation for the latter to collect the win and make a point which he did via a double-double of 30 points and 12 assists along with six rebounds, a steal, and two blocks.
Porzingis played only 11 minutes prior to leaving the court. Maxi Kleber had a big night celebrating his 30th birthday with a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Reggie Bullock scored 23 in a reserve role and will need to continue to produce especially now that Tim Hardaway Jr. will miss significant time.
Jalen Brunson (13), Josh Green (12), and Dwight Powell (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Sterling Brown (foot) is questionable while Porzingis (knee) is out Sunday. Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot) is out indefinitely.
Orlando Magic
With only 10 wins this season, two have come in the last three games and both were notable. The first against the second-seeded Bulls and the other a definitive victory versus their cellar-dwelling counterparts the Pistons.
In recent matches, the Wagner brothers have been feasting and understandably have a natural chemistry that comes from years of playing together growing up.
Although rookie Franz has provided the majority of the highlights it’s was Mo the older brother who delivered 23 points versus the Bulls. Unfortunately, he’s extremely inconsistent as he scored just two points in each of the next two matches.
Franz took center stage in the victory versus the Pistons as he led with 24 points and joined five of his teammates registering double-digit scoring.
Terrence Ross offered 21 points off the bench and will likely be the main player shopped prior to the trade deadline. Mo Bamba delivered a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds while Wendell Carter Jr. was one rebound shy (11 points, nine rebounds) of matching him.
Chuma Okeke (17), Cole Anthony (12), and Gary Harris (10) were the others scoring in double-figures.
E’Twaun Moore (knee), Michael Carter-Williams (ankle), Jonathan Isaac (knee), Markelle Fultz (knee), and RJ Hampton (knee) are all out indefinitely.
