Wednesday, January 12th the Dallas Mavericks and New York Knicks will play for the first final time this season. The teams will play again on March 9th in Dallas.
The Mavericks last played Sunday in a 113-99 winning effort versus the Bulls while the Knicks played Monday in a 111-96 winning effort versus the Spurs. All-time the Mavericks have the advantage of winning 42 of 80 contests. Last season the teams played twice with the teams each winning on the road.
The Mavericks are riding a six-game winning streak and hit the road for a mini two-game series featuring the Knicks and Grizzlies then return home for a five-game stint. The Knicks will play five of six at home prior to hitting a heavier road segment with eight of 10 on the road.
Dallas Mavericks
Luka Doncic returned to the lineup after missing another game due to a tweaked ankle and the result was an impressive victory to halt the Bulls’ win streak at nine. Dallas continues to be one of the top defensive squads with the sixth-ranked defense but is first through the last 10 games.
They are a deceiving squad defensively as I’ve noted in prior posts the eye test doesn’t visually look like they are strong in that area. Rather they focus on positioning to stop transition and protecting the ball to limit turnovers.
While they aren’t a top rebounding team another key to their success is keeping opponents off the offensive glass. To wit, they give up the fewest opponent offensive rebounds.
The victory versus the Bulls reflected these defensive principles as they had only 10 turnovers (for 10 points) while they turned seven Bulls turnovers into 11 points. They won the rebounding battle 48 to 39 and only allowed Chicago to grab eight offensive rebounds.
Moreover, the Mavericks who run at a slower pace compared to the Bulls won the fast break battle 13 to 11.
As for stat specifics, Doncic served up a triple-double in the match with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 14 assists. All five Mavs starters reached double-figures including Maxi Kleber (18), Jalen Brunson (17), Dorian Finney-Smith (12), and Dwight Powell (10).
Boban Marjanovic (conditioning) is questionable while Kristaps Porzingis (quarantine) and Willie Cauley-Stein (personal) are out for Wednesday.
New York Knicks
Through the last six games, the Knicks are riding the middle with three wins and three losses. Of their 20 wins 14 are against sub .500 teams (and one versus the .500 Wolves). Four of the five wins against teams possessing above .500 records occurred prior to November 8th.
Julius Randle’s relationship with the Knicks fans has taken on a life of its own after he gave them a thumbs down to demonstrate his dissatisfaction for booing him in games prior and his post-game explanation cost him $25k for using profanity – – but the Mecca took note.
Fans eagerly booed him during the game on missed shots, chanted MVP for RJ Barrett (a sentiment previously reserved for Randle), and chanted for his backup Obi Toppin to enter the game and replace him. While Randle pulled down 12 boards he scored just two points on 1 of 7 from the field.
Barrett followed up his game-winner from Thursday with a 31 point effort along with three rebounds, four assists, and hit 3 of 4 long balls. Mitchell Robinson registered a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Evan Fournier (18), Alec Burks (16), and Immanuel Quickley (12) were the other double-figure scorers.
Nerlens Noel (conditioning), Kemba Walker (knee), and Ryan Arcidiacono (ankle) are all questionable for Wednesday. Derrick Rose (ankle) will be re-evaluated in eight weeks.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Knicks are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Dallas’ last 7 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 7 of New York’s last 9 games.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. New York Knicks NBA Prediction
New York has to overcome their sub .500 home record and while their recent efforts are a closer facsimile to last season’s defensive prowess they still struggle to put points on the board consistently.
If both teams play to their defensive potential this should be a slugfest.
