Tuesday, October 25th, finds the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans playing for the first time this season.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Mavericks winning three of the four contests. The Mavericks hold the advantage all-time winning 50 of the 74 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
Plus they have the best player on the floor — Luka Doncic.
I spent a great deal of last season trying to figure out how the Mavericks’ defense was in the top 10 and limiting strong offensive clubs.
Jason Kidd wasn’t throwing out crazy defensive schemes akin to Nick Nurse or Eric Spoelstra Rather he got his squad to do some simple things and commit to a few essential fundamental principles.
The Mavericks aren’t a super lengthy club although their guards are taller than most but they give up rebounds in order to get back quickly and stop teams from scoring in transition. They ranked 24th in total and offensive rebounds last season as evidence of that fact.
They also are sticklers at protecting the ball to stop opponents from scoring easy points.
Dāvis Bertāns (knee) and Frank Ntilikina (ankle) are out Tuesday while Facundo Campazzo (personal) is probable.
New Orleans Pelicans
Comparatively, the Pelicans score more points per game, get more rebounds and free throws, and have a superior starting lineup with several players to counter Luka in terms of offensive production.
Although just three games into the season we quickly witnessed the offensive prowess of the Pels with CJ McCollum (23.2), Brandon Ingram (22) and Zion Williamson (22) all averaging over 22 points per game.
Unfortunately, two of those players are questionable for Tuesday after Brandon Ingram took a hit to the head (he’s NOT in concussion protocols) and Williamson hit the deck hard causing a hip contusion.
In addition, Herb Jones (knee) is questionable. E.J. Liddell (knee) and Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) and out indefinitely.
