The Western Conference Finals shifts back to the Twin Cities for Game 5 as the Dallas Mavericks make a second attempt to clinch while the Minnesota Timberwolves seek to follow up their 105-100 Game 4 win and extend the series.

Last season the Wolves held the advantage, winning two of the three regular-season meetings and were equally successful this season taking the series 3-1. Dallas holds the all-time record between the squads with 77 victories in 136 matches.

For the first time in the series Kyrie Irving had a rough shooting night (6 of 18) which was partially due to Chris Finch’s adjustment to put Jaden McDaniels on him.
Also key was the absence of Dereck Lively II who could return for Game 5.
Luka Doncic recorded a triple-double of 28 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists but like Irving was inefficient (7 of 21).

To this point in the playoffs, Dallas ranks seventh offensively (114.4) and eighth defensively (111.5) with a plus +2.9 net differential ranking fifth.

Finally, the Timberwolves were able to hang onto a lead in clutch time and their two stars outplayed the Mavs stars. Anthony Edwards flirted with a triple-double of 29 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists while Karl-Anthony Towns had his best game of the series by far.
Towns seemingly listened to the pundits who kept begging him to use his size and go inside which is where he took his first seven shots. With his success he eventually moved out to the perimeter where he connected on four of his five attempts in the latter stages of the match.

Through the regular season, Minnesota ranked tied for 17th on offense (120.8) and first defensively (105.5) while they were a plus +15.3 net differential, ranking third overall.
In the playoffs, the Wolves rank sixth offensively (115.5), and fifth defensively (109.8) with a plus +5.7 net differential ranking third overall.

Game 4 was the first time the Wolves resembled the squad who so thoroughly dominated the Nuggets and Suns. Minny still faces a major uphill battle given teams that start a series 3-0 are 155-0 in NBA history.
That said, this scenario is the prime opportunity for the streak to be broken as the Wolves have home court so if they can win on Thursday all the pressure will be on Dallas to win at home or risk returning to Minny for a Game 7.
Interesting stats to consider in this series are Kyrie Irving is 14-1 in close-out games (the lone loss being Game 4 in this series) while the Wolves have yet to lose this postseason when they face elimination (3-0).
These games have all come down to clutch time and the team whose All-Star duo performed best collected the win. The question is whether the Wolves figured things out too late or can ride the shift in momentum.
It’s no secret I was pulling for Minny after they ousted my preseason pick (Nuggets) but at this point is that a rational pick?
Sometimes we have to trust our gut – in this case, mine was inspired by AntMan. To that end, when they lost Game 5 in Denver he told the Nuggets staff members he’d see them for Game 7, and on Tuesday he replicated that act by telling Cowboys’ Micah Parsons he’d be back for Game 6 with new AE shoes for him.
