Sunday, February 27th, finds the Dallas Mavericks playing the Golden State Warriors for the third of four matches this season. The teams split the prior two meetings with the Mavericks winning 99-82 on January 5th and the Warriors winning 130-92 on January 25th.
Dallas will host the final meeting between the clubs on March 3rd. The Mavericks last played Friday losing 109-114 to the Jazz while the Warriors played on Thursday routing the Blazers 132-95.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Mavericks taking two of the three contests. The Mavericks have won 87 of the 167 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Dallas Mavericks
The loss to the Jazz may have cost the Mavericks more than just a single game in the standings. By holding Luka Doncic to 8 of 24 from the field Utah offered up a strategy for how to defend the superstar that proved fruitful.
Doncic still collected a double-double with 23 points and 11 assists plus seven rebounds but sticking the bigger Rudy Gobert onto the superstar forced him to miss multiple shots or move the ball to teammates.
More teams may start looking at utilizing larger players on Doncic now and taking a chance on his teammates missing shots. It’s not a bad idea because there isn’t anyone on the Mavs who has demonstrated the ability to put up 20 or 30 point efforts over an extended period.
Case in point, while Dwight Powell and Spencer Dinwiddie scored 22 and 20 points most teams will take their chances on them replicating those efforts over allowing Doncic to get hot scoring 40 to 50 points.
Davis Bertans also offered 17 connecting on five of his eight 3-point attempts — his area of expertise but one where he struggled to produce from while in Washington.
Entering the match versus Utah the Mavs were 1.5 games back of the Jazz and 1.5 games up on Denver. The loss proved costly on both fronts as they fall 2.5 games back of the Jazz and with the Nuggets win are now in a virtual tie with them.
Frank Ntilikina (ankle) and Trey Burke (shoulder) are questionable while Marquese Chriss (knee) was downgraded to doubtful for Sunday versus Golden State. Theo Pinson (finger) and Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) are out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
Although the Suns have a healthy lead over the Warriors it’s not a given they can’t catch Phoenix down the stretch especially if they play like they did in the rout of the Blazers in their first game back from the break.
They’ve already made up a half game with Phoenix losing to the Pelicans and enter this contest six games back.
Including this game the Dubs will play seven of eight versus teams currently seeded eighth or higher and after this match hit the road for a four-game stint.
The question remains when Draymond Green will return to the court as his presence makes this team a bonafide title favorite.
Andre Iguodala (back) and Klay Thompson (illness) are questionable to play Sunday versus the Mavericks. Draymond Green (calf) and James Wiseman (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Golden State is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Dallas is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Golden State’s last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Dallas’ last 7 games against a Western opponent
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
If Thompson can’t go the edge leans to the Mavs who will be anxious to bounce back from the loss to the Jazz while the Dubs will want to collect the win before hitting the road.
The defensive scheme will be the key as Steve Kerr noted his unhappiness about that end of the floor, particularly while Green has been out. The Mavs are one of the better perimeter defenses (33.7%) and the Dubs rank 22nd on scoring in the paint where the Mavs rank in the middle of the pack defensively (17th) .
Either Golden State will need to attack the paint more or be extremely clever on the 3-point screening but I think this game could go either way although I’m betting on Steph Curry staying hot from behind the arc and I like the over.
