Wednesday, March 16th, 2022, Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets meet for the second and final time this season. The Nets won the first match 99-102 on December 7th.
Dallas last played on Sunday defeating the Celtics 95-92 while the Nets are playing the second game of a back-to-back having defeated the Magic 150-108 on Tuesday.
Last season, the squads played twice with Dallas winning both contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Nets in 47 of their 80 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
This match takes on extra credence for the Mavericks who have pulled into a virtual tie with the Utah Jazz so a victory would push them ahead into fourth and possession of home court in the first round.
Dallas surprised with their defensive ability this season and while they’ve made believers out of the masses I’m still uncertain how they’ll fare in the postseason when a team has seven games to figure out how to attack them and where the holes in that defense are.
Dallas is on a roll having won seven of their last eight matches with this the third contest of their five-game road trip. Luka Doncic is nursing a few injuries but still carrying his club particularly offensively.
Doncic played in seven of the last eight games, averaging 31.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.7 steals while 35.8% from deep on 9.6 attempts.
Reggie Bullock (personal) and Marquese Chriss (knee) were downgraded to out for Wednesday versus the Nets. Theo Pinson (finger) and Tim Hardaway Jr.(foot) are out indefinitely.
Brooklyn Nets
After not playing all season the fact Ben Simmons is suffering a setback in ramping up to return to the court begs the question of whether his back is going to be a lingering issue throughout this career.
It was presumed physically he would be ready to go but for him to already be suffering a flare-up it sure seems like this is going to be an ongoing issue. With only 13 games left to play in the regular season, his absence becomes more of an issue because of the limited amount of time he’ll have to integrate with the Nets and learn their schemes.
The larger issue will be getting time with Kyrie Irving. The Nets keep relying on the belief New York will change the protocols but with Europe seeing an uptick in positive COVID tests and North America tending to follow a few weeks after it’s not a given the situation will change.
That means Simmons “might” get only one game with Irving and that’s assuming he can get healthy and on the court within two weeks. That has to be concerning for Brooklyn.
Fortunately, the Nets have Kevin Durant who can win a game virtually by himself although we saw how important the others are as the Nets need KD to do so much more when they’re missing Irving.
Especially when one other scorer is missing like Seth Curry who was out with an ankle injury versus the Knicks. KD dropped 53 points and Brooklyn only won by three points. With Irving back on the floor Tuesday they got 60 points from the guard allowing Durant to take a bit of a rest from doing everything.
LaMarcus Aldridge (hip), Seth Curry (ankle), David Duke Jr. (ankle), and Cam Thomas (back) are all questionable for Wednesday versus the Mavericks. Kyrie Irving is ineligible at Barclays although he can attend games and sit on the bench. Ben Simmons (conditioning) and Joe Harris (ankle) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Dallas is 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games.
- Brooklyn is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games at home.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Dallas’ last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 12 of Brooklyn’s last 17 games.
- The Mavericks are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games on the road.
- Nets are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a home underdog.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Dallas has multiple lengthy players they can put on Durant. Who’ll guard Doncic is the less obvious answer although presumably James Johnson and Bruce Brown will spend time defending him and possibly even KD.
If Irving was playing I’d lean to the Nets but without Irving and possibly Curry, the Mavericks definitely have the edge.
