Thursday, October 27th, 2022, Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets meet for the first time this season with their second match scheduled for November 7th in Dallas.
Preseason predictions tapped both clubs as potential title contenders but they’ve struggled to start the season. Dallas last played on Tuesday losing to the shorthanded Pelicans while the Nets are on a back-to-back having lost to the Bucks 99-110 in the front side Wednesday.
Last season, the squads played split the season series each winning once The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Nets in 48 of their 81 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
Luka Doncic has been spectacular to start the season but for the second time in three matches, his perimeter shot missed the mark leading to another loss.
The Mavericks led 97-91 with 9:40 left in the fourth but weren’t able to hold off an inspired Pelicans group that was missing Brandon Ingram (concussion), Zion Williamson (hip), and Herb Jones (knee).
While the Mavericks were the healthier team it was the Pelicans who had all five starters and three of the four reserves who scores in double-figures.
Doncic had a huge night registering 37 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists but struggled from deep. Spencer Dinwiddie and Christian Wood each scored 23 as the only other double-figure contributors.
Dallas came into the match with the second-best perimeter shooting (41.9%) on 37 attempts per game but struggled in the loss with Doncic shooting 2 of 13 and the team shooting 12 of 39 (30.8%).
It dropped the Mavs from second to 10th (38.1%) demonstrating how quickly stats can shift in the early season.
To that end, in a bit of an oddity despite losing the game they improved from second to first offensively and held onto first in net rating but dropped from third to 15th defensively.
Tim Hardaway Jr. (foot), Dāvis Bertāns (knee), and Frank Ntilikina (ankle) are all questionable for Thursday.
Brooklyn Nets
This is the first of a four-game homestand that will feature the Mavericks’ two games against the Pacers and the Bulls after which they will hit the road to play 10 of their next 12 matches.
It puts the emphasis on the need for Brooklyn to win as many of these next home games as possible. Then again, they might be eager to hit the road because they were more successful there (24-17) than they were at home (20-21) last season.
Although Kyrie Irving is back playing every game this season the Nets are still trying to integrate Ben Simmons who hasn’t exactly shone in his first few games.
He’s yet to hit double-digit scoring but he is putting his stamp on the game elsewhere dishing dimes and collecting rebounds. A sign of his rust is the 13 turnovers he produced in four matches versus 21 cumulative points.
Foul trouble has been another concern as he fouled out twice in four matches. In the loss to the Bucks, Durant led the way with 33 points, Irving added 27, and Royce O’Neal (12) was the only other double-figure scorer.
Markieff Morris (personal) is out Wednesday while Seth Curry (ankle)and TJ Warren (foot) will be out at least until early November.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Over is 4-1 in Mavericks’ last 5 overall.
- Nets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall
- The Mavericks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
- Over is 4-1 in Nets’ last 5 vs. a team with a losing straight-up record
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
In terms of key categories (stats are prior to the Brooklyn match vs. Bucks) the Mavericks dominate. Dallas has the edge in points, field goal percent, bench production, rebounding, fewer turnovers, along with better bench and defense.
The lone category Brooklyn is better in is free throw percentage!
Both teams are coming off embarrassing losses and while the Nets are at home I like the Mavs to up their defensive intensity as they look to bottle up KD while Simmons likely gets the unlucky draw of trying to stop Luka (will Simmons foul out again?).
