Thursday features the tip-off of the NBA Finals between the West’s Dallas Mavericks and the East’s Boston Celtics.
These clubs took vastly different paths to reach the finals. As the fifth seed, the Mavericks had to oust three of the top four seeds in the West (Clippers, Thunder, and Wolves).
In contrast, the Celtics got arguably the easiest path in history facing the Heat without Jimmy Butler or Terry Rozier, the Cavaliers without Jarrett Allen and Donovan Mitchell (for half the series), and the Pacers without Bennedict Mathurin and Tyrese Haliburton for half the series.
Season Series
In history, the Celtics own the advantage of winning 46 of the club’s 86 meetings. Both this season and last the Celtics swept the two-game season series.
This is the first time the clubs are meeting in the postseason as the Celtics have their eyes set on an NBA-best 18th championship banner while the Mavericks are making just their third trip to the Finals having split the two prior opportunities.
Dallas Mavericks
Kyrie Irving continues to revamp his image and remind fans why he’s considered one of the most skilled guards in league history. Ironically, his time in Boston marked the start of the J’s era although the vitriol the Celts’ fans feel for him still remains.
He’s also not fared well against his former team losing the last 10 times they played — but remember what happened in Game 1 when Irving took the fuel Anthony Edwards dispensed and made the Wolves pay.
Offseason additions of Derrick Jones Jr., Dereck Lively II, and Dante Exum improved the roster, however, the trade deadline moves to add PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford were the finishing touches.
From early March the Mavericks posted the best defense in the league and were second only to the Celtics in the win/loss column.
Luka Doncic may be in his first finals but is unequivocally the best player in the series, however, he has experience as a teenager playing in Europe’s equivalent to the NBA Finals.
Mavericks Stats
Dallas ranked eighth offensively (117.0) and 18th in defensive rating (114.9) with a net differential of plus +2.1 that ranked 15th overall.
To this point in the playoffs, Dallas ranks sixth offensively (115.2) and seventh defensively (111.1) with a plus +4.1 net differential ranking fourth.
The Mavericks perform well against the spread with a 59-40 record through 99 contests this season.
Mavericks Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Luka Doncic, PG (probable — ankle)
- Olivier-Maxence Prosper, PF (upgraded to questionable —ankle)
Boston Celtics
The seven-year era of the J’s (Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown) has been highly successful albeit without a title. This is their second trip to the Finals in three years while four of the other six years the Celts reached the Conference Finals.
Tweaks made to the roster to upgrade by adding Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday positioned them as the most formidable starting five in the association.
They’ve coasted to this point in their postseason run, never fully being tested but now will face a fully healthy and worthy opponent. Which is why the presence of Porzingis is crucial.
Although he’s been playing cat and mouse with the press regarding his injury and whether he’ll play, it feels like a bit of cloak and dagger to keep the Mavs guessing.
Celtics Stats
Boston ranked first offensively (122.2) and was second defensively (110.6) while registering a net differential of plus +111.7 which also ranked first overall.
Through the postseason, the Celtics rank second offensively (119.6) and third defensively (108.7) with a plus +10.8 net differential that ranks first overall.
In terms of the Celtics’ performance against the spread, they offer a 48-43-5 record through 96 matches.
Celtics Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Kristaps Porzingis, PF (upgraded to probable — calf)

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Ample storylines abound for the series as Kyrie Irving and Kristaps Porzingis each face their former clubs. While Irving will be unmercilessly booed by the Garden faithful, Porzingis won’t likely catch the same ire from the Mavs fans.
Rather it was reported Luka and Kristaps never clicked so keep your eyes out for a similar demonstration by Luka if he scores on him as he did against the Wolves’ Gobert.
Size will play a major role in this series as the Mavs feature their twin towers and the Celtics counter with Zinger and Horford. Additionally, the wing size of the Bean Town crew is expected to wreck havoc on Irving but Doncic is another matter altogether.
As for who guards the J’s, Washington and Jones Jr. likely draw that assignment but unlike their previous opponents, the Celts have no weaknesses in their starting five so everyone will need to be sharp.
The other keys to who wins will be who wins defensively in the paint and on the perimeter. Here’s where the previous series offers some intriguing results…
Dallas faced two of the top three perimeter shooting clubs in the prior rounds (1st: Thunder, 3rd: Wolves) holding both under their season marks and below 36% (they ranked eighth and ninth in the playoffs).
Conversely, the Celts faced the 9th (Pacers), 12th (Heat), and 15th-ranked (Cavs) teams who all were missing key cogs who shoot the 3-ball and still weren’t able to affect Indiana who shot .02% less.
As for scoring and defending the paint, the changes at the trade improved the Mavericks in this category while the Celtics don’t utilize that option as much as the perimeter.
Both clubs fared well on the glass but the Mavericks (4th overall) are significantly better than the Celtics (3rd overall) on the offensive glass.
Although the ‘others’ will play a huge role in the series it’s likely to come down to which All-Star duo performs best and for Game 1 it’s led me to take the points and Dallas as their route to get here has them better prepared.
