Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks bounced back from a loss to the Knicks by defeating the Grizzlies immediately the next night in Memphis, 138–122.

It was Dallas’ first back-to-back spot of the season and Kristaps Porzingis rested. Luka Doncic led the scoring with twenty-four points but seven other Mavericks hit double-figures; plus Boban Marjanovic, starting in place of Porzingis, had nine.
Rick Carlisle, the former Celtic, as some of our old readers may remember, deployed eleven guys and ten of them played between sixteen and twenty-nine minutes. Between the day off on Sunday to travel and Porzingis’ return after the extra rest, Dallas will be in a fine spot to challenge the Celtics at the Garden before getting on to New York for a rematch with the Knicks.
Boston Celtics
Boston was also in action on Saturday and squashed the Spurs in San Antonio, 135–115. Jaylen Brown scored a season-high thirty; Kemba Walker chipped in twenty-six; and the Celtics held LaMarcus Aldridge to just three points all night in the blowout.

Robert Williams also had the best game of his young NBA career, scoring eleven points on multiple thunderous jams and swatting away six shots at the rim. He and Daniel Theis, who started at center and played twenty-three excellent minutes, have performed admirably in Enes Kanter’s absence.
Jayson Tatum had nineteen of his own and Marcus Smart came out in the first half hot from three to finish with sixteen. It was Boston’s most complete team performance to date in what has been a highly successful season.
Only one thing: Gordon Hayward bumped Aldridge on an awkward screen and fractured his left hand. He went to the locker room in the second quarter and didn’t return.
Obviously, he will not play in this game. It’s unclear how much time he will miss but Brad Stevens indicated after the game he thinks it will be perhaps a month.
It’s not a fatal blow to the team leading the Eastern Conference after the seasons’ first few weeks but it won’t do Hayward, who was making significant individual progress, any favors. He just scored his career-high with Boston on Tuesday against Cleveland and was having another good game in San Antonio before the injury.
Defensively, Boston won’t suffer without Hayward in the short-term. Expect Brown and Tatum to pick up more of the slack on offense.

Generally, I see two fairly evenly-matched teams that have had success here in the early season and will both play hard. Boston will be the favorite and I’ll play Dallas +2 and up.
