Saturday, February 12th, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Philadelphia 76ers play for the first of four meetings this season. Cleveland will host again on March 4th while Philly will host on March 16th and April 3rd.
Both teams are playing back-to-back sets with the Cavaliers beating the Pacers 120-113 and the 76ers defeating the Thunder 100-87 on Friday.
In history, the Cavaliers own the advantage winning 106 of the clubs’ 216 meetings. Last season the teams played three times with Cleveland winning two of the three contests.
Cleveland Cavaliers
In his debut with the Cavaliers, there were pluses and minuses for Caris LeVert. And to be fair he’s just joined this team so there has been literally no time for him to assimilate or learn anything other than basic schemes.
The main positive was how his presence opened up the court with the biggest benefactor being Darius Garland who scored 27 while the bigs each registered double-doubles so floor spacing factored.
The negative was his shooting (4 of 11 from the field and 1 of 3 from deep) and again he needs to find his rhythm with his new teammates. As he does, it will be interesting to see how he impacts the other areas of the game such as assists, rebounds, and the intangibles.
On Friday, with Darius Garland out LeVert got the starting nod versus his former team and was far more productive with 22 points (10 of 19), two rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block.
We’ll need to keep an eye on the above situation specifically as it may alter what the Cavs elect to do with Collin Sexton as he hits free agency this offseason
Seven Cavs scored in double-figures with Jarrett Allen posting a double-double of 22 points and 24 rebounds. Rajon Rondo (17), Cedi Osman (14), Kevin Love (14), Dean Wade (13), and Isaac Okoro (10) were the other double-digit contributors.
Garland (back) is questionable for Saturday. Lauri Markkanen (ankle) is out indefinitely. Collin Sexton (knee) is out for the season.
Philadelphia 76ers
The countdown is on for James Harden’s arrival in Philly. The team ran a teaser video during the match to the roaring approval of all at Wells Fargo.
Harden will visit with team doctors to assess his hamstring so won’t play this weekend and depending on the doctor’s feedback the earliest he could make his debut would be Tuesday at home versus the Celtics.
Not having Harden was one thing but the 76ers also lost their back-up center (Andre Drummond) and starting guard (Seth Curry) which meant they had to make some major tweaks. Fortunately, Shake Milton returned after an 18 game absence dealing with a back injury.
Joel Embiid continued his MVP season with a double-double of 25 points and 19 rebounds plus four assists, a steal and five blocks but shot an inefficient 8 of 25 with the defensive attention all focused on him.
Tyrese Maxey (24), Tobias Harris (17), and Matisse Thybulle (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
The only 76ers on the injury report are the two new acquisitions Harden (hamstring) and Paul Millsap (personal).
NBA Betting Trends:
- The 76ers are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Cavaliers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Grizzlies
- The over/under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
- Philadelphia is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- Cleveland is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
The Sixers won on Friday but didn’t have a good offensive rhythm or flow. While the Cavaliers also had their struggles they’ll post a far more difficult challenge for the 76ers than the Thunder did and unlike most teams have the frontcourt size to bother Embiid.
Injuries and absences will play a factor in this match but Embiid will need some help if they want to gain the victory whereas the Cavs will need LeVert to replicate his Friday effort if Garland can’t go.
Since Garland played two games ago I’m going to speculate the Cavs elected to keep him fresh for Saturday and therefore take them in this match.
