Monday, November 7th, the Cleveland Cavaliers and LA Clippers play in the first of two meetings this season. Cleveland will play host on January 29th.
Both clubs are playing the second game of a back-to-back set with the Cavaliers beating the Lakers 114-100 while the Clippers lost 101-110 to the Jazz.
All time the Cavaliers have the advantage of winning 76 of 134 matches versus the Clippers. Last season the teams played twice with the Cavaliers winning both contests.
Cleveland Cavaliers
This reformulated Cavaliers squad is looking very strong ranking second in the East and also leaguewide with an 8-1 record having only lost to the Raptors.
Cleveland has two significant wins against the upper tier both against the Celtics and lost to the only other team with a winning record they’ve played (Toronto).
Unlike the Clippers, however, I’m less cautionary about their potential and record because they’ve been consistent and played through the injury to Garland.
Granted, they’ve yet to play a baseball set (where MOST teams are splitting those matches) with this contest being their second back-to-back set of the season.
Again I feel much more comfortable calling this Cavs squad a legitimate top-tier contender. Their plus +12.3 differential is the highest of all 30 teams which also factors into that statement.
Defensively, the Cavaliers allow 103.9 points per game tied for second-best and allow foes to shoot the sixth-lowest field goal percentage (44.4%) and are tied for the ninth-best 3-point opponent percentage.
On offense, they score 116.2 points on average (8th), and shoot 47.3% from the field (tied 9th) and a robust 38.9% from deep (4th).
Darius Garland (knee) and Donovan Mitchell (ankle) got banged up in the overtime battle versus the Celtics sitting out Friday but played Sunday so presumably, they’ll be good for this match.
Dylan Windler (ankle) and Ricky Rubio (knee) are out.
LA Clippers
As good as the Clippers looked during their three-game win streak we got a not-too-subtle reminder to consider the source (read: LA’s opponent).
Sure, they beat the Rockets twice and the Spurs but then the Jazz reminded everyone the Clippers’ five wins this season are theoretically all versus teams who’ll miss the playoffs (unless the Lakers or Kings dramatically improve).
That’s not to say the Clippers can’t or won’t ascend into the team many analysts and experts projected as the favorite to win the title. What it does do is punctuate the reality until they beat a legitimate elite club it’s best not to give wins against the lower-tier too much credence.
The fact remains the Clippers had played one of the easiest schedules to date (if not the easiest). They are also missing their best player (Kawhi Leonard) but the fact he’s suffering issues this early 16 months after sustaining the ACL injury is a concern.
Although their defensive numbers are solid let’s hold off proclaiming any prowess, until after this game to see how close they align to their averages.
With these points in mind… LA allows opponents to score an average of 106.6 points per game which ranks sixth and is holding foes to the third-lowest field goal percentage (43.9%) and sixth-lowest perimeter efficiency (33.1%).
Offensively, the Clippers are scoring an average of 102.3 points per game which ranks 30th! They are shooting 47.1% from the field which is tied for 12th and 32% from deep ranking 26th.
Luke Kennard (chest) is questionable for Monday while the report varies on Kawhi Leonard (knee) depending on the site with one stating he’s definitively out and another as questionable. Notably, the Clippers hadn’t submitted their NBA official injury report as of 4:00 AM EST.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Cavaliers are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
- The Clippers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
- The Cavaliers are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of less than .400.
- Under is 4-0 in the Clippers’ last 4 overall.’
- The Cavaliers are 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Los Angeles.
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. LA Clippers NBA Betting Prediction:
Both clubs will be playing under the same fatigue level which favors the Cavaliers’ youth and frankly a more consistently strong product to this point.
The spread and favorite have vacillated back and forth several times but as of posting it’s the Cavs with the one-point edge and although it wouldn’t surprise me if the Clippers raised their performance to the level of their competition I’m still leaning toward the Cavaliers.
As a side note, the over/under of 220 feels high given each team’s opponent scoring averages and them playing on consecutive nights.
