On Tuesday, March 8th Central Division foes the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers finish their regular-season series. Cleveland will attempt to sweep having won on January 2nd (108-104), February 6th (98-85), and February 11th (120-113).
Both teams last played Sunday with the Cavaliers beating a depleted Raptors squad 104-96 while the Pacers lost 123-133 to Washington.
In 2020-21, the teams played three times with Indiana sweeping the regular-season series. The Pacers hold the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 105 of their 202 matches
Cleveland Cavaliers
The victory Sunday was essential as it gave Cleveland the 3-0 series lead and more importantly a three-game edge in the standings.
While Cleveland hasn’t had great luck this season, especially when it comes to injuries (see Jarrett Allen below) they sure got lucky when it came to the timing of when they played Toronto.
Pascal Siakam was out in the initial meeting, the December 26th match notoriously had four hardship signees meeting on the bus on the way to the arena, and Sunday the Raps were missing starters Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, and backup point guard Malachi Flynn.
That led to Scottie Barnes running the point although he did a decent job (six assists – zero turnovers). It was also fortuitous as the Cavs had been reeling of late, losing six of seven and a loss would’ve narrowed the gap to a single game between them and Toronto.
Although it was an ugly game the rookies both offered standout performances with Evan Mobley posting a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds, plus four assists, and three blocks.
In fact, three Cavs registered double-doubles including Lauri Markkanen (22 points, 12 rebounds) and Darius Garland (17 points, 10 assists). Cedi Osman (17) and Kevin Love (15) were the other double-figure contributors.
Jarrett Allen left the game Sunday for a quad contusion but post-game the Cavs updated he fractured a finger so he’ll be out indefinitely as will Caris LeVert (foot), and Rajon Rondo (toe). Collin Sexton (knee) is out for the season.
Indiana Pacers
Speaking of fortune, the Pacers got the unlucky break of Kristaps Porzingis making his Wizards debut against them and going off for 25 points, five rebounds, and two blocks in 21 minutes of action.
Indiana has lost 11 of 14 and are in the 13th seed in the East 26th overall. They are also in an unenviable position of being stuck in the middle ground.
To wit, they are 10.5 games back of the last play-in seed and have five more wins than the Pistons which is the closest of the bottom three teams who’ll have the best odds of winning the draft lottery.
Lance Stephenson (ankles) and Chris Duarte (toe) are questionable for Tuesday although Rick Carlisle suggested Duarte would miss a further week or two in the presser.
Myles Turner (foot), T.J. McConnell (wrist), and TJ Warren (foot) are all out indefinitely. Ricky Rubio (ACL) is lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Indiana is 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games.
- Cleveland is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 15 of Indiana’s last 19 games
- Cleveland is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against an Eastern opponent
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction
Cleveland has the added advantage of length and arguably better overall talent and definitive identity. Whereas Indy is still trying to figure out their identity and develop chemistry.
The Pacers’ only hope is to play fast because the Cavaliers prefer to play slow as evidenced by their fourth slowest pace. Indy ranks 20th but has played faster since acquiring Tyrese Haliburton (now 14th).
One caveat – – the Cavs are 2-6 in games Allen doesn’t play – so while it makes sense to take the Cavs with how they’ve struggled of late I’m going with the long shot of the Pacers and the points.
