Thursday, February 24th, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the Detroit Pistons for the third of four meetings this season. Cleveland will host the final match on March 19th.
The teams split the two prior meetings with Cleveland winning 98-78 on November 12th and Detroit winning 115 -105 on January 13th.
Cleveland has been off since February 15th since they were hosting the All-Star weekend having lost 116-124 to the Hawks while the Pistons last played Wednesday, February 16th defeating the Celtics 112-111 ending their nine-game win streak.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Cavaliers taking two of the three contests. The Pistons hold the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers 131 times of their 227 regular-season matches.
Cleveland Cavaliers
With the All-Star break over the Cavaliers return to finish the stretch run with 23 games remaining and in a three-way tie with the 76ers and Bucks for second place.
The split is 10 road matches and 13 home games with 14 against top eight seeds and 9 versus teams ninth or lower which is considered the ninth easiest remaining strength of schedule.

They entered the break on a mini two-game losing streak but should have a glow from the success (other than that horrific dunk contest) of the weekend.
Their players, in particular, fared exceptionally well with Evan Mobley’s Rising Stars team winning on Friday, the Cavaliers trio of Mobley, Jarret Allen, and Darius Garland winning the Skills Competition Saturday, and the latter celebrating as members of Team LeBron on Sunday.
Lauri Markkanen (ankle) is out indefinitely while Collin Sexton (ACL) is out for the season.
Detroit Pistons
While the Pistons ramp up their tanking efforts they return from the break with Cade Cunningham having made a good impression at the All-Star game.
He won tournament MVP for the Rising Stars event and was a finalist in the Skills Competition (Team Rook) losing to the trio of Cavaliers noted above.
Detroit has the 17th ranked strength of schedule to finish the season with 13 matches versus top-eight seeds and 11 versus teams seeded ninth or lower. They’ll play 11 games on the road and 13 at home.
The question is whether the 14th ranked Eastern team (29th overall) will try to play spoiler to build some momentum their youngsters can use psychologically for next season.
Or will they commit fully to the tank to ensure their best chances of landing the top draft pick in back-to-back years?
Frank Jackson (back) is questionable for Thursday.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Analysis:
The Cavaliers navigated Garland’s back injury just prior to the break losing four of their last nine games.
With the Bulls and Bucks dealing with injuries and the 76ers needing to integrate James Harden and figure out who picks up the slack of the players lost (Seth Curry, Andre Drummond).
There is a real opportunity for the Cavs to climb even higher up the ladder. The Heat is the only team fully healthy and could pose the greatest challenge for Cleveland in terms of who will take the top seed.
The first game back from the break should offer insight into how invested the Cavs are in the pursuit of that top seed – but the Pistons have enough padding at the bottom to play spoiler which is what I think they’ll attempt to do.
