A classic Midwest, Rust Belt match-up on Monday night sees the sleepwalking Cleveland Cavaliers travel north to take on the Pistons. Detroit isn’t too much to write home about in an improved Eastern Conference, but they are still light years ahead of the LeBron-less Cavs. To say Cleveland looks listless is a true understatement.
It seems like the Cavs have waved the white flag really early, so we’ll see if they can get up for this Monday night road game. They’ll probably wish they stayed back at the hotel and watched Monday Night Football.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The 2018-19 season so far in Cleveland is the clearest example yet of how vital LeBron James is to a team. Add ‘Bron into the mix and a lottery team instantly becomes a playoff contender, or better. But take him away? A previous Finals attendee might just be the worst team in basketball.

It’s difficult where to start the postmortem, which is hilarious to say only 15 games into the regular season, but C’est la vie. The Cavaliers cannot score (27th ranked in the league) and don’t move the ball (29th ranked in assists per game – just over 20 per), two elements that are vital to success in the modern evolution of the NBA.
The best of a motley crew is Jordan Clarkson, who is averaging 15.4 points per game.
Veteran shooter Kyle Korver has been out with a foot injury, but he expects to be back for tonight’s game; we’ll see what kind of shooting form he’s in after some time off. Cleveland’s coaching staff has said they want to work Korver back into the fold gradually.

Kevin Love, the one star the Cavaliers have left after departures of Kyrie Irving and LeBron the past couple of years, has only played four games this year and is out recovering from surgery. In all, it’s a dumpster fire for the former champs.
Detroit Pistons
Head coach Dwane Casey’s guys are probably feeling good about themselves lately, and they should be, after recently travelling to Casey’s old team, the Toronto Raptors, and stealing a win in Canada. When the Pistons can put the ball in the hoop, they’re a pretty solid outfit.
The Pistons play defense, they guard the paint and swarm the glass quite well. They might not be the ‘Bad Boys’ of the 1980s (Dennis Rodman, Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer and friends) but they aren’t easy to play against – a hallmark of any Casey-coached club.
For one, high-flying Blake Griffin has been great since the trade that brought him to Motown. He’s averaging 24.5 points per game, and he just dropped 30 on the Raptors in the comeback victory.

The above .500 team currently ranks fourth in the league in rebounding, which shows the Pistons use their length and athleticism to their advantage. In a league with few big men anymore, center Andre Drummond is an animal on the glass (16.2 rebounds per) and is chipping in with almost 19 points too.
Unsung guys like the Reggies (Jackson and Bullock, respectively) have been adding nice supplementary scoring to Griffin’s brightest star. All in all, things are looking up for Detroit basketball.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Cleveland is 2-16 SU in its last 18 games
- Cleveland is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games on the road

- Detroit is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games when playing at home against Cleveland
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Prediction:
Detroit should be just too much for crappy Cleveland, making the trip around Lake Erie. With Love out and Tristan Thompson still just showing awesomeness in flashes, the Pistons should kill the Cavs on the boards, and push the pace on them as well.
Both teams have had a few days off, but after the good vibes generated from the Toronto win, I don’t see how Detroit comes out at home and lays an egg against such a god-awful outfit like Cleveland. ‘King James’ brought a title to Cleveland, but the fans still must be rueing the day the hometown hero left for sunny L.A.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Pistons -11
Expect Detroit to drive the ball at will, and even if the Pistons are cold shooting from the outside, the second-chance opportunities with offensive rebounding should paper over the cracks.
