Saturday, October 22nd, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls play for the first time this season. As Central Division rivals they’ll play four times in total with matches scheduled for December 31st in Chicago and two visits to Cleveland on January 2nd, and February 11th.
The Cavaliers lost their season opener 105-108 to the Raptors while the Bulls are playing their first back-to-back game having played and losing a heartbreaker in Washington on Friday.
Last season the clubs played four times with Chicago taking three of the four contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record with 132 wins in 226 matches versus the Cavaliers.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cinderella team of the East in 2022 is back with a bolstered starting lineup following the deal that brought Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland.
Mitchell got to show his full skill set on opening night when Darius Garland took an inadvertent finger to the eye that cut his eyelid forcing him from the game.
Mitchell took over the point guard and scoring duties delivering 31 points, nine assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Unfortunately, his addition to the Cavaliers also meant the team lost some depth and remain thin on the wings.
Facing a team like the Raptors who have so many players 6’8 who play on the wings meant the Cavs had a tough time stopping Toronto down the stretch and struggled against their uniform length in the clutch time.
Jarrett Allen posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, Evan Mobley offered 14 points and six rebounds, Caris LeVert added 10 points and Cedi Osman offered 17 points off the bench.
The Cavs length allowed them to dominate paint scoring (52-36) but the Raptors didn’t shy away from attacking the rim which led to 32 trips to the charity stripe. Moreover, Toronto won the battle of the boards (12-6 on offensive end).
A weakness for the Cavaliers was they kept coughing up the ball which resulted in 15 Raptors steals and 17 turnovers leading to 25 points plus they had issues slowing Toronto in transition resulting in a 20-8 fast break advantage.
Garland (eye) is questionable for Saturday.
Chicago Bulls
The Bulls will play their first back-to-back set this season following a 100-102 loss to the Wizards on Friday. Last season, the Bulls played an unusually high number of these consecutive night games due to early COVID issues.
Of their 17 back-to-back sets, the Bulls posted a 9-8 record on the second night of these duo-game series.
DeRozan followed up his opening 37-point effort with 32 points, six rebounds, and six assists effort against the Wizards and just missed a 3-pointer that would’ve given the Bulls the victory.
Nikola Vucevic offered 24 points and eight rebounds while Andre Drummond posted a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Coby White (10 points) offered the other double-figure score.
Zach LaVine (knee) was held out yet again after missing the season opener but is expected to play versus Cleveland.
Lonzo Ball (knee) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:

- Over is 14-5-1 in the Cavaliers’ last 20 road games.
- Under is 5-1 in the Bulls’ last 6 overall.
- The Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Chicago.
- Under is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings between the clubs.
Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Analysis:
Even if LaVine suits up the Bulls will be in tough facing the Cavaliers’ twin towers. On the other hand, the one area the Cavs are weakest is defending the wings and transition which is where DeRozan lives.
Cleveland isn’t desperate given this is just the second game of the season — but they’ll play this match, finish with a back-to-back versus the Wizards, play the Magic then hit a scheduled segment featuring seven of 10 on the road including a West Coast trip.
That reality will up their desire to log the first ‘W’ of the season.
